버마 轉役 은 太平洋 戰爭 進行 過程에서 日本 帝國 이 타이 를 出發하여 英國領 印度 帝國 을 攻擊하는 過程에서 英國領 버마 에서 벌어진 一連의 戰鬪를 意味한다.

日本 帝國 陸軍의 慘敗人 임팔 戰鬪 가 이 全域 進行 過程에서 進行된 戰鬪이며, 이 戰鬪에는 英國軍을 中心으로 美國軍과 中國 國民革命軍 이 聯合軍을 이뤘다.

日本軍이 버마를 攻掠하게 된 背景은, 그 首都인 양곤 을 奪取하고, 聯合軍의 對中國 補給路人 버마 로드 를 遮斷하며 끝까지 모든 與件이 순조롭게 進陟되면 英國領 印度 帝國 侵攻도 念頭에 두기 위해서였다.

위와 같은 協商으로 安全하게 後方을 確保하고 타이 를 樞軸國 으로 끌어들인 日本 帝國 은, 쇼지로 아이다 麾下의 日本 帝國 陸軍 第15軍 을 動員하여 1942年 1月 16日 타이 쪽으로부터의 侵攻을 開始했다. 토마스 J. 허튼 中將이 指揮하는 英聯邦群 2個 師團은 말라야 에서와 마찬가지로 日本軍을 過小評價하였기 때문에, 별다른 防禦 準備를 하지 않았다. 그러나 日本軍의 戰術的 能力이나 機動性은 英聯邦君을 훨씬 凌駕하였고, 따라서 英聯邦軍은 쉽게 격파당하여 뿔뿔이 흩어지고 말았다.

3月 7日 수도 양곤 이 陷落되었으며, 이어서 만달레이가 陷落되었으며, 4月 29日에는 랭군-만달레이-라쉬오-곤명-중경을 잇는 對中國 補給路가 完全히 遮斷되었다. 戰鬪 期間 中 장제스 의 參謀長으로 活動해 왔던 美國 陸軍 의 조셉 스틸웰 所長은 中華民國 第5軍과 第6軍을 이끌고 熾烈하게 戰鬪에 臨하였으나, 亦是 印度 方面의 임팔로 敗走하였다. 스틸웰 所長은 當時 정글을 뚫고 逃亡 나온 狀況을 가리켜 "地獄에서의 脫出" 이라고까지 말하였다.

日本軍은 英聯邦群 2個 師團과 中華民國 第5, 6軍을 앞세워 防禦하던 聯合軍을 뛰어난 戰術과 機動性으로 壓倒하여 敗退시켰다. 그러나 日本軍은 때마침 雨期가 닥쳐오고, 다른 戰線보다 많은 神經을 써야 했기 때문에, 더 以上 作戰을 進行시킬 수가 없었다. 그리하여 日本軍은 5月 20日頃 버마의 大部分을 掌握하는 것으로써 初期 戰鬪를 끝냈는데, 이 동안 聯合軍은 無慮 約 900마일이나 되는 長距離 撤收를 敢行하였다. 그러나 重要한 補給路가 끊긴 中國은 이로부터 버마의 정글 속에서 決死 抗戰의 意志로 日本軍에 抵抗하기 始作하였다. 또한 樞軸軍으로써 戰鬪에 參加한 버마 防衛軍 亦是 英國보다 더 强壓的이고 殘酷한 日本의 統治에 못이겨 아웅산 을 中心으로 하는 反日 運動을 展開하게 되었다.

1944年 3月부터 같은해 7月에 걸쳐 印度로 들어가는 임팔에서 英國軍과 日本軍이 戰鬪를 벌였으나( 임팔 作戰 ) 무다구치 렌野 中將의 不足한 리더십, 遮斷된 補給路, 정글의 더위 等을 뚫지 못한 日本軍이 敗退하였고 急速度로 日本軍의 士氣는 떨어지기 始作했다.
