國家重點大學
中 하나이다. 1902年에
난징 大學當
(南京大學堂)으로 開校하였으며 1920年代 以後 난징 高等師範大學, 國立 中央大學을 거쳐 1952年에 현대의
中華人民共和國
의 大學으로 變更되었다. 옛 金陵 大學의 校誌를 現在 週 캠퍼스로 쓰고 있다.
난징 大學은 現在 人文學部, 社會科學部, 이학부, 情報·工學部, 醫學部의 5個의 單科大學으로 構成되어 있다. 41個의 學科에 104個 學士 過程, 258個의 碩士 過程, 228個의 博士 課程이 開設되어 있다. 鄭敎授 1,400名, 副敎授는 1,800名 假量이며, 圖書館에서 現在 900萬餘 卷의 藏書를 所藏하고 있다.

Since the origination in 258, the public higher learning institution at Nanjing changed in each dynasty or period. Liangjiang Higher Normal school was closed in the end of 1911 when the Qing Dynasty was overthrown. In 1915 after the Republic of China was founded, Nanking Higher Normal School was established to replace the Liangjing Normal School, and in 1949 when the Republic of China was replaced by the People's Republic of China in mainland, its name was changed from National Central University to Nanjing University. During
Cultural Revolution
after 1966, the university stopped recruiting students twice altogether for six years.
