에서 태어났다. 아버지는 아들과 同名(同名)인 토마스 채터턴이고 職業은 音樂家, 詩人,
貨幣學者

硏究家였다.
아버지는 채터턴이 태어나기 3달 前인 1752年 8月 7日에 죽었다. 채터턴은
에드워드 콜스턴
의 慈善 學校에 들어가 읽기, 쓰기, 算數, 敎理問答을 배웠다.
어렸을 때부터 읽고 쓰는 것을 좋아하여, 11살의 나이에
브리스틀 저널
의 寄稿者가 된다. 돈이 생기는대로 貸出 圖書館에서 冊을 빌리는 데 쓸 程度로 讀書를 좋아했다.
自身이 쓴 擬古體 詩들을 토마스 롤리(Thomas Rowley)라는 15世紀 詩人이 쓴 詩라고 속여 出版社에 보냈으나 假짜로 疑心받아 出版되지 않았다.
以後
런던
으로 건너가 作品 活動을 繼續했지만, 貧窮에 못 이겨 砒素를 먹고 自殺했다.
