Eric Arthur Blair ( 25. juni   1903 – 21. januar   1950 ), kjend som George Orwell , var ein britisk forfattar fødd i India . Han voks opp pa dei britiske øyane og reiste til Burma i 1921 . Der utdanna han seg til, og arbeidde som politi . Etter fem ar reiste han heim att.

I 1937 for han i strid for republikken , det vil seie mot Franco , i den spanske borgarkrigen . Opplevingane hans her vart nedskrivne i boka Homage to Catalonia , som og finst pa norsk som Hyllest til Catalonia .

Dei to mest kjende bøkene hans, Animal Farm (1945) og 1984 (1949), er svært samfunnskritiske og negative til totalitære styre. Orwell var demokratisk sosialist .

Orwell døydde av tuberkulose , 46 ar gammal.
