프리츠 라이버

프리츠 로이터 라이버 주니어 (Fritz Reuter Leiber Jr., 1910年 12月 24日 - 1992年 9月 5日 )는 큰 影響力을 行使한 美國의 科學小說 , 幻想小說 , 恐怖小說作家이다. 그는 有名한 체스 플레이어였으며, 펜싱 챔피언이기도 했다.

라이버는 1936年 1月 16日에 존퀼 스티븐스와 結婚했으며, 1938年에 아들 저스틴 프리츠 라이버를 낳았다. 1969年 아내가 죽은 後 3年 가까이 알코올 中毒狀態로 지냈지만, 〈옅은 黃色 가운〉(The Pale Brown Thing)(1977)이라는 題目으로 팬터지 앤 사이언스 픽션 지에 連載된 幻想小說《어둠의 聖母》(Our Lady of Darkness)로 再起했다. 이 作品은 都市강령술(megapolisomancy)이라는 黑魔術로 召喚되는 精靈들이 자라나는 背景으로 현대 샌프란시스코를 다루고 있다. 《어둠의 聖母》는 世界幻想文學賞 을 受賞했다.

末年에는 몇 年間親舊로 지내던 저널리스트이자 詩人인 마고 스키너와 再婚했다. 많은 사람들이 라이버가 貧民村에서 困窮한 生活을 하며 힘들게 살았다고 잘못 알고 있는데, 實은 라이버 自身이 市內에서 살면서 저녁食事와 映畫를 즐기며 가끔 旅行을 하는 것으로 儉素하게 生活하는 便을 좋아했던 것뿐이다. 그는 파프르드와 그레이 마우저 시리즈 世界觀의 權利를 確保한 TSR社( 던전 앤 드래곤 의 製作社)가 보내오는 印稅手票만으로도 便히 生活할 수 있었다.

라이버는 토론토에서 열린 科學小說 컨벤션에 스키너와 함께 參席했다 돌아오는 길에 넘어졌고, 몇 週 뒤 숨을 거두었다. 死因은 老患이었다.

그는 短篇集《The Ghost Light》(1984)에 收錄된 〈Not Much Disorder and Not So Early Sex〉라는 짧은 自敍傳을 執筆했다. 重要한 轉機로는 브루스 바이필드가 著述하고 네크로노미콘 프레스에서 出版된 《Witches of the Mind》가 있고, 러브크래프트와의 文學的交流를 다룬 에세이는 S. 셰익스피어 演劇俳優였던 父母님 - 프리츠 라이버 시니어와 버지니아 라이버 - 사이에서 난 그는 오래前부터 演劇에 魅了되어 있어서, 〈No Great Magic〉과 〈Four Ghosts in Hamlet〉 같은 短篇에서 셰익스피어 巡廻劇團에 對해 다루는가 하면, 長篇《A Specter is Haunting Texas》에 俳優이자 公演企劃者人主人公을 등장시키기도 했다.

그의 Change War 시리즈 小說, 《The Big Time》은 前(全)宇宙의 歷史를 바꾸고 또 바꾸는 "Snakes"와 "Spiders" 두 勢力 사이의 戰爭을 다루고 있지만, 作品 속의 모든 事件은 少數의 登場人物들에 依해 演劇舞臺만한 規模의 時空間에 孤立된 작은 거품 속에서 일어난다.

그는 몇 篇의 映畫에도 出演했는데, 워너 브러더스 의 The Great Garrick(1937)에서는 自身의 아버지와 함께 나오기도 했다.

라이버는 活動期間中初期 20年 동안 H. P. 러브크래프트 와 로버트 그레이브스 의 影響을 많이 받았다. 1950年代以後, 그는 칼 융 의 咀嚼, 特히 아니마 와 그림자라는 槪念에 漸漸傾倒되기 始作했다. 이 槪念들은 그의 作品속에서 頻繁하게 言及되곤 하는데, 特히 아니마는 女性에게서 느끼는 魅力과 距離感을 探究하는 手段으로 使用되었다.
