Er erhielt 1988 zusammen mit Johann Deisenhofer und Robert Huber den Nobelpreis fur Chemie fur die Erforschung der dreidimensionalen Molekulstruktur des Reaktionszentrums der Photosynthese im Purpurbakterium Rhodopseudomonas viridis.
