Me 1 nentor 1993 , hyri ne fuqi Traktati i Mastrichtit , duke krijuar zyrtarisht Bashkimin Europian . Traktati ishte hartuar ne v. 1991 , ne takimin e delegateve te Komunitetit Europian , ne Mastricht te Holandes dhe firmosur ne v. 1992 . Marreveshja synonte krijimin e Parlamentit Europian , e Bankes Qendrore Evropiane , perdorimin e nje monedhe te perbashket dhe unifikimin e politikes se jashtme dhe sigurise.
