KBS board OKs dismissal of chief

The board of directors of South Korea's public broadcaster KBS has voted to dismiss its president. He is alleged to have meddled in news reporting to favor the government's position.

The board passed a motion on Thursday demanding the discharge of President Gil Hwan-young. The majority vote decision is expected to be approved by the country's President Park Geun-hye, who has the power to appoint the broadcaster's head.

Gil removed KBS's news chief last month after allegations of improper remarks on the Sewol ferry disaster. The move prompted senior officials and journalists at the broadcaster's news department to abandon their duties. Unionized workers went on strike.

They argue that Gil intervened in news content to support the government's stance, undermining unbiased news coverage.

KBS has drastically reduced news programming. During local elections on Wednesday, it was unable to send reporters to interview candidates who were certain to win.

The board decision is likely to end the disorganization. But reports from Seoul say it will take time for KBS to regain public confidence due to Gil's staunch refusal to resign and the strike that continued with no regard to viewers.
