02 AUG 90 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait
03 MAR 91 Iraq accepts cease-fire
Dawlat al Kuwayt (State of Kuwait)meaning (fortress built near water) is less than 400 years old as a country (1613). It came under the Al-Sabah rule in 1751 and in 20 sum-odd years aligned itself with the British Empire in order to remain independent from the Ottoman Empire. By 1899 Kuwait was a formal protectorate which ended 19 June 1961 when Kuwait became in independent state. When Great Britain withdrew its support and troops in 1961, Kuwait was immediately beseiged by Iraq based on Iraq's claims it was part of the Ottoman Empire ruled over by Baghdad. During the First Persian Gulf War - 1980 - 1988 - Kuwait sided with Iraq and allowed use of its ports and billions of dollars in aid and materiels were supplied to Iraq during the protracted war.
On 16 July 90, Iraq sent a letter to the Arab League accusing Kuwait of exceeding its OPEC quota and of stealing oil from the Iraqi portion of an oil field straddling the border. For the next 2 weeks diplomatic initiatives to end the stand-off and allow Iraq a graceful exit were to no avail... on 02 August 90 Iraq invaded Kuwait, overran Kuwait City and were on the Saudi Arabian border by noon.
The UN responded with a flurry of papers and resolutions (the Paper Tiger). Iraq claimed it was within its rights as it had been 'invited' into the country and quickly annexed the Emirate. The US led an embargo initiative and within 2 months half a million troops had massed in Saudi Arabia. In November of 1990 the UK and US advanced a UN resolution demanding Iraq withdraw from Kuwait by 15 January 1991. When the deadline passed and Iraq did not budge the US and UK began a 5 week campaign of bombing and sorties over Kuwait and Iraq. After the air campaign, ground forces entered on 23 February 91 and within 100 hours Iraq's military disintegrated. Kuwait was liberated by the end of February.
