On May 2008 the launch of Africa’s first DMB mobile TV commercial service became a reality with the launch of FonTv. The service, which uses DMB technology, is operated by Black Star TV, who have completed nearly a year of trials before launching full commercial operations countrywide. The new service allows users to view movies, sports, music videos, 24-hour news and current affairs. Accessories and the handset necessary for viewing, known as FonTV, cost GHC350 (US$345.66) and include free service for the first three months, after which time subscribers pay GHC4 per month. It is hoped this service will cover 10 regions by the end of 2009.
