  1. I believe that in picture 1 (track), the sprinter from the United States is Shawn Crawford, not Wallace Spearmon; and in picture 5 (Women's Volleyball), the blocker on the right is Tayyiba Haneef-Park, not Heather Bown.

  1. The Ukrainian boxer celebrating his victory is absolutely hilarious. He looks like a comic book character, suspended midair, smiling with that mouthpiece.

The blood-smeared French pentathlonist is fantastic, too.

  1. Nice propping a brutal regime with the Mao photo --somehow I cannot imagine you posting a similar picture with Hitler on the background.. Of course we know Hitler is not cool, but communists are.

And where the heck is a photo of the Greatest Olympian Ever, Michael Phelps?!

  1. I enjoyed the photos very much. Thanks a lot.

By the way, there's a typo in the caption of the 8th photo:
"Angel Valodia Matos of Cuba is lead away..."
    lead > led

A nit on the caption to picture 19: "British" is not a noun. Perhaps, "Briton" or "British athlete"?

  1. The stories behind the pictures inspire all human beings to take risks and persevere. The photographers inspire everyone with a camera to go out and take a picture and everyone without one to buy one.

  1. 5 synchronized swimming photos and not one of Phelps? One may question whether he's the greatest Olympian ever, but measured against those in his own sport, he broke a record that has held for 30-plus years and deserves recognition for his efforts, even here. His feat was astounding and was certainly one of, if not the hallmark of these Olympics.

Posted by Robert August 25, 08 03:37 PM
  1. @Robert and others - note that this post is described as "highlights of the last week". Phelps swam in earlier in the Olympics. Also, note that there are tens of thousands of photos out there, and what you see here are only 39, there's no way to be all-inclusive. That said, Phelps was truly awesome, I agree.

  1. At 83 I"m not too much on Olympics, but this year I had some time to watch the closing. I thought the Chinese did a great job on the closing. Again, at my age, I'm wondering what did it cost? With all of the people in China I guess the number of participants isn't much of a problem. I did enjoy the closing though.

    Posted by MarcoTogni.it August 25, 08 06:06 PM
  1. No. 16 how do you think that that photo is "propping a brutal regime"? If there were no photos to remind you of the political realities behind the games, I might just agree with you, but this photo reminds you that behind the gloss and glamour of the games, China is an uncertain quantity, and a very powerful and potentially dangerous one too. I know certain hard line right wingers in the US of the "we don't negotiate with evil" school of thought, were praying that these games should prove a disaster. They have been a spectacular success, and I would sugges,t a force for good in China. Anyway enough politics, great photos! Thank you.

JJ.OO.

    Enhorabuena, China.

  1. Thank You! No Phelps! The NBC Phelps overload was unbearable, its a true pleasure to see an Olympic picture without him. He's a great athlete, no doubt, but the media spin on him is too much for my taste.

  1. All of these photos are awesome. My favorite is Huo Liam's dive with the water sprinkling out of hair. The coloration of all the photos are fantastic.
