The sitar ( English: / ? s ? t ?ːr / or / s ? ? t ?ːr / ; Hindi : ????? , Punjabi : ?????, Urdu : ???? sit?ra pronounced  [s??taːr] ) is a plucked string instrument. It uses sympathetic strings along with a long hollow neck and a gourd resonating chamber to make a rich sound with complex harmonic resonance. It has been used throughout South Asia for many centuries. Sitar was invented by the Sufi singer Amir Khosrow in the 18th century . [1]
