Publije Ovidije Nazon ( Publius Ovidius Naso ) poznatiji kao Ovidije , bio je anti?ki pjesnik. On se, pored Horacija i Vergilija , ubraja među tri najve?a pjesnika klasi?ne rimske knji?evnosti. [1] U svojoj ranoj fazi, Ovidije je pisao ljubavne pjesme, u zrelijoj fazi bavio se epskim ciklusima, da bi u kasnoj fazi pisao tu?balice (jadikovke).

Njegova dobro o?uvana djela i radovi nisu bila dovoljno cijenjena i po?tovana u kasnoj antici. Međutim, u Srednjem vijeku i baroku , ona su imala izuzetno sna?aj utjecaj na pjesni?tvo, likovnu umjetnost i muziku tog perioda. Ipak, u periodu romantike , taj utjecaj je opao, o?ivjev?i opet u drugoj polovini 19. vijeka. [1] Iako je njegov cjelokupni rad duboko urastao u kulturnu svijest dana?nje civilizacije, ipak se " Preobra?aji " ("Metamorfoze") smatraju za njegovo najve?e djelo.

Ovidije je pisao vi?e o svom ?ivotu nego ve?ina drugih rimskih pjesnika. Podaci o njegovoj biografiji crpe se prvenstveno iz njegove poezije, posebno iz Tristije 4.10, [2] koja daje podu?i autobiografski prikaz njegovog ?ivota. Drugi izvori uklju?uju Seneku Starijeg i Kvintilijana .

Ovidije je prvih 25 godina svoje knji?evne karijere proveo prvenstveno pi?u?i poeziju u elegi?nom metru sa erotskim temama. [3] Hronologija ovih ranih radova nije sigurna, ali nau?nici su utvrdili okvirne datume. Smatra se da su njegovo najranije sa?uvano djelo Heroides , pisma mitolo?kih heroina njihovim odsutnim ljubavnicima, koja su mo?da objavljena 19. godine prije Hrista, iako je datum nesiguran jer zavisi od obavijesti u Am. 2.18.19?26 koji izgleda opisuje zbirku kao rano objavljeno djelo.
