Won er vieri gsi isch, isch er mit siiner Mueter und siim jungere Brueder uf Birmingham z Angland zuglet, nochdam si Vater, a Bankier, z Sudafrika gstorben isch. Im Johr 1900 isch si Mueter katholisch worde und au dr Tolkien isch e duef religiose Katholik gsi. Wo si Mueter 1904 gstorben isch, isch e katholische Briester Vormund vo de beide Brueder worde. Vier Johr druf het sich dr Tolkien in en anders Waisechind, d Edith Bratt, verliebt. Si isch spoter si Inspiration fur eini vo siine Romanfigure, d Elbin Luthien Tinuviel, worde. Si Vormund het nut vo dere Liebi welle wusse, und dr Tolkin het muesse warte bis 1913, won er mit einezwanzig erwachse worden isch, bevor er dr Edith e Hurotsadrag het chonne mache.

Dr Tolkien isch uf d King Edward's School z Birmingham gange und het denn am Exeter College z Oxford gstudiert. 1915 her er dr B.A. , vier Johr spoter dr M.A. gmacht. Im Erste Waltchrieg isch er iizoge worde und het an dr Somme kampft. Noch em Chrieg het er churzi Ziit am The New English Dictionary mitgschafft, wo spoter The Oxford English Dictionary worden isch. Er het die anglisch Sproch und Literatur an de Universitete Leeds (vo 1920 bis 1925) und Oxford (1925 bis 1959) underrichdet und isch Spezialist gsi fur Alt- und Middelanglisch. Er isch sehr beschafdigt gsi mit siine akademische Pflichte und het au an andere Universitete examiniert, so het er numen e baar Publikatione gmacht in dere Ziit, wo aber in siim Fald bedutende Iifluss gha hai. Drunder si gsi Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (1925; mit em e. V. Gordon), d Standardusgob vo dam Wark, Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics , e Vorlasig won er 1936 ghalte het und richdigswiisend worden isch, und en Usgob vom mittelalterlige Handbuech fur Eisiidlere Ancrene Wisse (1962).

Walteruehmt isch er mit siine Fantasy -Gschichte worde. Dr Hobbit (anglisch The Hobbit ), e Chinderbuech, isch 1937 usecho und dr Herr vo de Ring (anglisch The Lord of the Rings ), e Trilogii, won e Fortsetzig vom Hobbit isch, 1954-1955.
