Shkencat formale jane nje grup shkencash te cilat merren me studimin dhe hulumtimin e sistemeve formale , sic jane logjika , matematika , statistika, shkenca teorike kompjuterike, inteligjenca artificiale , teoria e informacionit, teoria e lojerave, teoria e sistemeve, teoria e vendimeve dhe gjuhesia teorike . ^[1] Ndersa shkencat natyrore dhe shkencat shoqerore kerkojne te karakterizojne sistemet fizike dhe sistemet shoqerore, perkatesisht, duke perdorur metoda empirike, shkencat formale jane mjete gjuhesore te cilat merren me karakterizimin e strukturave abstrakte te pershkruara nga sistemet simbolike. Shkencat formale ndihmojne shkencat natyrore dhe shoqerore duke siguruar informacione rreth strukturave te cilat keto te fundit i perdorin per te pershkruar boten si dhe perfundimet perkatese per to. ^[2] ^[3]
