Is sach minic a scriobhann daoine a leitheid seo: 16 Meitheamh, 2014
16 Meitheamh 2014 ata ceart. Ni ga leis an chamog. Sin an
diktat
o bhoic mhora an Bhearla agus na Gaeilge. Ni mise a chum an riail (ce nach bhfuil me ina coinne ach oiread).
We should not use commas after months in the order day-month-year. Further details at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers on the English Wikipedia.
Nuair a thagann dha ainmfhocal cinnte le cheile, fagtar an chead ainmfhocal gan an t-alt. Smaoinigh i gconai ar "oifig an phoist". Ni deirtear "an oifig an phoist".
Cupla sampla eile:
- Comortas Amhranaiochta Eoraifise na nOg
- uachtaranacht Obama = Obama's presidency (
the
presidency of O.)
- ursceil na mna = the woman's novels
- foinse na Danoibe = The source of the Danube
If you have a double definite, drop any article before the first noun. "Comortas Amhranaiochta Eoraifise na nOg" admittedly is complicated?four nouns in a row in genitive relation to each other: "Comortas Amhranaiochta Eoraifise" acts as a unit and would not take the article even if it stood alone without "na nOg" (I
think
: since Eorafis is a proper noun and therefore definite).
- Is e Eireavan priomhchathair na hAirmeine. Yerevan is the capital of Armenia.
- Is i Londain priomhchathair na Riochta Aontaithe.
Don't use the feminine pronoun because "cathair" is feminine. The pronoun refers back to
Eireavan
(masc.) and
Londain
(fem.) in these sentences. Most city names will be masculine. A recent change by one of our best editors is a good reminder that some elements in Irish placenames like Doire are feminine.

Is teoiric e
Coincheap an 'Hidden Ireland' sa Diaspora Gaelach
. Seans gurbh e
Daniel Corkery
(Donall O Corcora) a cheap an nath
Hidden Ireland
ach is docha go raibh an coincheap fein ann i slite eagsula i bhfad roimhe sin. Maidir leis an Diaspora Gaelach de, thug
Val Noone
an tearma ceanna ar chultur na nGael a thainig go
Victoria
na hAstraile. Bhi leagan amach na n-irisi comhionann le (iseal) ceim na Gaeilge sa tsochai: an 'Gaelic Department' no 'Gaelic Corner' i bhfolach i mean no ag deireadh an nuachtain. Ta smaointe incurtha leis an
Hidden Ireland
seo ag Noone le fail ag moran scribhneoiri, mar shampla D.N.Doyle, a scriobh, 'that even the range of anglicized or Gaelic folktales and folksong learned in Ireland, largely forgotten in America, would yet have broadened and made flexible and responsive minds to be reeducated amid the smelters and fly shuttles of the new America; and may even have furnished an inward cocoon of memory to preserve principle and self-respect against poverty and insecurity' [1]. San Astrail, duirt Al Grassby ag cruinniu poibli, 'Carnevale 1978' , 'The message of the Irish to all Australians today is: don't let anyone bully you out of your heritage. Don't let anyone rob you of traditions kept alive in the secret moments of many families for a thousand years' . [2] An Ghaeilge, dar ndoigh, bunchloch an Ghaelachais runda so, ach ta a rian le bhraistint ar ghneithe eile den chultur chomh maith: Bearla na nGael, nosanna, ceol, ...srl...agus fiu cultur nua-cheaptha a bhionns drochmheas air go minic : 'Let us at home', a scriobh John A. Murphy , ' resolve never again to sneer at the "Mother Machree" songs or the St Patrick's Day extravaganza, but rather to recognize that this Irish-American subculture is a valid and significant expression of a distinctive ethnic experience.' [3]
Sampla suimiuil den 'Hidden Ireland' seo is ea na cuimhni cinn a bhreac James Francis Dwyer sios, scribhneoir Astraileach a bhain clu domhanda amach i lar na 20u aoise. B'as 'Mitchelstown, Co. Cork' da thuismitheoiri agus chuireadar futhu in 'Camden Park, NSW'. Scealai no seanchai a bhi i n-athair James: 'He had words that were like crushed opals, fine glittering words that were strengthened here and there by a flashing phrase of Gaelic...Irishmen came great distances to hear his stories.' Blianta ina dhiadh sin, scriobh James Dwyer cuig cinn desna scealta sin agus thangadar amach ar na hirisi MaCall's Magazine ( Nua Eabhrac ) agus Storyteller ( Lonndan) thimpcheall 1929.[4]
