<Abstract>

The Preaching in the Theology of Prosperity and The one in the Theology of the Cross

The prosperity theology spreading wide in 1980s experiences boom again recently in USA. The streams of preaching of the so-called megachurch influencing the American society is based on the theology of prosperity. The prosperity theology provides the preaching tastes the appetites of the members who want to become rich. The Gospel is here changed from the one of redemption into the pragmatic technic of living to guide the actual life to the desirable direction.

The megachurches in Korea have been affected, influenced not avoiding this trends. It is preached that God's blessing appears as a prosperity of secular position and goods. It was not in the specific cases of the one or two churches that the appointment of churches staffs were linked to the moneys. Korean church lost the power of social influence, became an object of the harsh blame beyond the criticism from the society. The church members are decreasing rapidly. The cheap preaching adjusted to the appetite of the congregation produced the worshippers with the big liver who do not know to repent, while disobedient to the command of God. The perverted faith of the christians that the God hearing only my prayer shall forgive also my sins made the comic situation of buying the indulgence and blessing with money.

The prosperitism to view the prosperity and success as the criterion of the faith had already appeared theologically in the scholastic theology of glory dominating the medieval age. The theology of glory, suggesting in the cognition of God the glory and power as criteria, leads the humans to the superbia of affirming his own works. The Reformator Martin Luther suggested the theology of cross as the alternative, calling the scholastic theology the one of glory. The theology of cross sees and cognizes through the suffering and cross the back side of God, namely, the visible side of God. It indirectly cognizes the God in the hidden side, namely the weakness and the foolishness.

The idea of preaching in the theology of cross is characterized as follows: Human comes through suffering into God. Human is sanctified through the overcoming the egoism, good combat with himself, and suffering. The love and sacrifice toward the neighbor is the self-sacrifice. The core of christian preaching is the cross and the spirit of the cross is the giving oneself to neighbors. In the postmodern age in which the materialistic worldview is ruling, a preaching based on the reformed worldview is needed. The theological idea of preaching for it is to deny the theology of glory and to conduct the preaching based on the theology of cross. The preaching put on the clothes of the culture. One needs to communicate the Gospel in the languages of today. The preaching should be based on the spirituality of cross exposing with the Word of the cross the problem of the worldview of prosperitism.
