Brits on top: Duffy, Adele and Coldplay clinch top awards as they lead British winners at Grammys

Welsh singer Duffy led the British winners at the star-studded Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last night, picking up Pop Vocal Album for her best-selling disc Rockferry.

The 24-year-old singer was one of several British female stars who won a coveted Grammy in an evening dominated by UK musicians.

Before the ceremony, Duffy admitted she hadn't even heard of the prestigious awards until recently.

The soul star, who grew up in the Welsh village of Nefyn, said: 'We didn't have satellite TV or anything. I didn't even know what Tamla Motown records were until a few years ago.

'But as soon as I got to America and worked in the music industry I immediately became aware of the Grammys.'

Fellow Brit soul star Adele enjoyed further success on the night, picking up two Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal performance for Chasing Pavements and Best New Artist.

Accepting her Best New Artist award, south Londoner Adele said: 'Thank you so much. I’m gonna cry... Duffy, I love you, I think you are amazing.'

Also representing London was R&B singer Estelle, who won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for American Boy alongside Kanye West.

The two teamed up earlier in the evening to perform their duet, which was a hit in both the UK and US.

One of the biggest winners of the night was Coldplay, who received Song of the Year, Best Rock Album and Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals for their disc Viva La Vida.

Dressed as Sgt Pepper-style soldiers, frontman Chris Martin said: 'Sorry to Paul McCartney for blatantly recycling Sgt. Pepper outfits.

'We’re not, of course, the heaviest of rock bands. We’re like limestone - softer, but just as charming.'

Also in attendance was Martin's wife Gwyneth Paltrow, who introduced Radiohead on stage.

As usual, both Martin and Paltrow refused to be photographed together at the ceremony.

The big disappointment for Brits came for X Factor winner Leona Lewis, who went home empty-handed, despite being nominated in three categories.

British band Radiohead were among the early winners of the night, picking up two trophies - Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Album and Best Alternative Music Album for In Rainbows.

West Midlands-born Robert Plant, former frontman of Led Zeppelin, received a stack of gongs for his collaboration with American country singer Alison Krauss.

The duo garnered Album of the Year for Raising Sand, Record of the Year for Please Read The Letter, and Pop Collaboration With Vocals for Rich Woman.

Meanwhile, an emotional Jennifer Hudson paid tribute to her murdered family members as she picked up her first Grammy Award last night.

The Spotlight singer, 27, fought back the tears after she was presented with the Best R&B Album accolade for her self-titled record by Whitney Houston at the star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles.

Hudson, who was supported by her fiance David Otunga on the night, said: 'Thank God, who brought me through. I'd like to thank my family in heaven - and those who are here today.'

The singer/actress, who won as Oscar for Dreamgirls two years ago, was devastated in October when her mother Darnell Donerson, brother Jason and nephew Julian King were found murdered in her hometown of Chicago.

Her former brother-in-law William Balfour had been charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of home invasion and is currently awaiting trial.
