Wisconsin Sports Network and WisSports.net are happy to announce La Crosse Central's Johnny Davis as the 2019 recipient of the
Dave Krieg Award
as the most outstanding senior quarterback in Wisconsin, part of the WSN Senior Football Awards.
La Crosse Central finished just 5-5 overall and exited in Level 1 of the playoffs, but it's tough saying where the team would have been without Davis. Accounting for 83% of the team's offense despite losing twin brother Jordan, an All-State caliber receiver, early in the season, Johnny did huge damage with both his legs and his arm.
He threw for 1,839 yards with 15 touchdowns, adding 1,335 yards and 20 scores on the ground in ten games. While it came in a tough 38-33 loss, Davis had more than 500 yards of offense against Sparta late in the season. He completed 25-of-40 passes for 411 yards and two touchdowns, adding 130 yards and two scores on the ground.
"Johnny might be the best offensive player ever to come out of our school and our conference, at least in my 30 years of being at Central as a player or coach," said Raiders head coach Tony Servais.
Davis would have had scholarship football opportunities but has accepted a scholarship offer from the Wisconsin Badgers hoops team. He was a Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-State pick last year.
The 6'5" signal-caller was recently named a Large Schools First Team All-State choice by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association.
Finalists for the award
were Davis, Kyle Allen of Hortonville, Brooks Blount of Waukesha West, Jacob Frantl of Hartford, and Isaac Lindsey of Mineral Point.
Past winners of the award include Oshkosh West's Trey Demler (2009), Franklin's Lance Baretz (2010), West De Pere's Jay Tollefson (2011), Watertown's Tarek Yaeggi (2012), Xavier's Matt Ferris (2013), Brown Deer's Zack Baun (2014), Amherst's Garrett Groshek (2015), Kimberly's Danny Vanden Boom (2016), Franklin's Max Alba (2017), and Kimberly's Cody Staerkel (2018).
The award is named after Dave Krieg, a graduate of D.C. Everest High School who went on to star at Milton College and later in the National Football League. Krieg ranks in the Top 12 in NFL history in career pass attempts, completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. He was selected to the Pro Bowl three times in his 12-year career.
