Biography

Gustav Holst is Notable.

Gustav Theodor Von Holst was born on 21 September 1874 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England to Adolph von Holst and to Clara Cox (Lediard) von Holst , who died when he was age 8.

He attended the Royal College of Music in London. With scholarship, he studied with Charles V. Stanford. While there in 1895, he met and befriended Ralph Vaughan Williams. He attended speeches of George Bernard Shaw and shared his passion for vegetarianism. He also attended speeches of William Morris and became a supporter of UKs socialist movement. In 1905, Gustav was appointed director of St. Paul's Girls School of Hammersmith, London, and composed St. Paul's suite for school orchestra. In 1907 he became the director of music at Morley College.

He married Emily Isobel Harrison in 1901 ^[1] .

Together they became the parents of Imogen Clare von Holst , a composer and musician in her own right.

Gustav passed away on 25 May 1934 in Ealing, London, England ^[2] and his ashes placed in the floor of the North Transept of Chichester Cathedral.
