Mistress Hanneke Pijlijser

Translated: Henrick, son of Geldulf, alderman from Brussels between 1250 and 1275 is the presumed father of Hanneke (Hannequin) Pijlijser , described as a fiery and red-haired beauty, who was the favorite mistress of Duke Jan I. Duke Jan I, or Jan Primus, had a Burgundian lifestyle, and for many was the symbol of the then ideal knight. And: Jan I was a remarkable poet of Middle Dutch minneliederen(love songs). His work is one of the oldest in the Dutch language.

Ic sag nie zo roden mond
Ochte ook zo minlike ogen
Als zi heeft, die mi heeft gewond
Al in dat herte dogen
Doch leev'ic nog in hogen
Ende hope des loon t'ontvaan
Geeft zi mi kwalen dogen
Zi mag mi's beteren saan
Lief, mi hevet uw minne
Zo vriendelike bevaan
Dat ic u met zinne
Moete wezen onderdaan

The result of their love, Jan Pijlijser , was born in 1272, at the same time that Duke John's legal wife, Margaret of France, had a stillborn twin and died in childbirth.
