Biography
Ono Yoko, who is more popularly known in the United States as Yoko Ono, was born in Tokyo on February 18, 1933, the first daughter and eldest child of
Ono Eisuke
and
Yasuda Isoko
. In 1935, she left Yokohama on June 13 and arrived at San Francisco on June 26 on the
Chichibu Maru
; she was traveling with her mother at that time to live with her father. She received her early education at Gakushuin. In 1939, Yoko and her family departed Yokohama again on December 28 and arrived at San Francisco on January 11, 1940, via the
Tatuta Maru
, and from there moved to New York City to live with father Eisuke as shown in the 1940 United States Census, only to return to Japan the following year.
Yoko received further education at Keimei Gakuen. In April 1946, she returned to Gakushuin. One of her classmates was the future Emperor of Japan. Yoko graduated in 1951 and attended the philosophy program at Gakushuin University for two semesters.
In 1956, Yoko eloped her first husband, but divorced in 1962 after living apart for six years. On November 28, 1962, she married her new husband; however, that marriage was annulled on March 1, 1963, because Yoko did not finalize her divorce from her previous husband. After finalizing the divorce, Yoko remarried her second husband on June 6. Two months later, she had a daughter on August 8.
Some time later, Yoko met Beatles member
John Lennon
. She was pregnant with a male child, also named
John
, but miscarried on November 21, 1968. After divorcing her second husband on February 2, 1969, Yoko married John in Gibraltar on March 20. They collaborated with each other on music projects during their marriage. However, they separated in July 1973, only to reunite by December 1974. Their son was born on October 9, 1975. Yoko became a widow when her husband was fatally shot on December 8, 1980.
Yoko continues to make music projects and occasionally collaborates with her only son. She saw her daughter again in 1998.
