Stephen Prokopovich Temoshenko [Степан Прокопович Тимошенко] is considered to be the father of modern engineering mechanics. [1]

Stephen Prokopovich Temoshenkowas born on 22 Dec 1878 (10 Dec in old style calendar) in the village of Shpotovka, Uyezd of Konotop in the Chernigov Governorate which at that time was a territory of the Russian Empire (today in Konotop Raion, Sumy Oblast of Ukraine). [1] His father was Prokop Timofeyevich, born 8 July 1847. [2] Two of his brothers were Sergius Timoshenko (architect) and Volodymyr Timoshenko (economist). [1]

Stephen married Alexandra Archangelskaja around 1902. [3] [4]

He graduated in engineering in 1901, and from 1906 through 1911 he was a professor (also dean, and chair) at Kviv Polytechnic Institute. After Russian forces took Kyiv in 1919, he moved to Zabreb, in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, where he took professorship at the Zagreb Polytechnic Institute. In 1920, he was able to travel back to Kyiv to be reunited with his family and to take them with him to Zagreb. [1]

In 1922 he accepted invitation to come to the United States from a former student. He became a faculty professor at University of Michigan from 1927 to 1936, and moved to Stanford University from 1936 to 1955, when he retired to work on publication of his books. [1]

In the 1930 US census, Stephen Timoshenko (age 51) was living in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, Michigan, with wife Alexandera (52) and daughter Marina (24). [3]

His wife Alexandra died in 1946. [2]

He spent his last few years Wuppertal, Germany, where his eldest daughter Anna Helzelt-Timoshenko lived. [5] He died on 29 May 1972 in Wuppertal, Germany. His ashes are buried in Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto, California, United States. [1] [6]
