Motivation [ edit ]

This property is a copycat of Supreme Court of Canada case number (P12592) to help identify cases in mainland China, i.e. the WTO China .

Case number is an unique ^* id-like text assigned for one legal proceeding, referencing the year the case was filed, court responsible for the judgement, trial type (first/appeal/retrial/restraining order etc.) and a sequence number of this trial type in that court.

It is shown on all formal legal documents related to that case. The case number for the previous legal proceeding must be cited in the appealing judgement text. See red links in s:zh:最高人民法院（2018）最高法行再128?行政裁定? ? (year) means legal proceedings, while 〔year〕 means out-of-court administrative decisions and appeals (lit. Administrative Reconsideration ).

However, when the court doesn't want people to dig into a specific case, they don't exposure the case number in the press releases. For example, the case number or its full judgement text was never published for Kris Wu scandal (Q107612866) , as of today.

Note: It is considered unique for cases filed in the recent years, using computer systems. I can't guarantee all case numbers don't conflict with each other before the nation-wide digitization, like before 2010.

I don't suggest restricting user input with regex. Third party like WIPO Lex use their own way to transliteration case numbers (e.g. Commercial Press Co., Ltd. V. Sinolingua Co., Ltd. (2016) J 73 MC No. 277 , Beijing Intellectual Property Court ) and the result doesn't fit to existing formatting, but it's still worth preserving when no corresponding Chinese number is available. A regex may also block case numbers before ~1970 from entering.

  I think it's like UN document symbol (P3069) and the value should be unique, while this case number is a combination of Arabic numeral (Q29961325) , brackets (Q174565) and sinograms (Q8201) .   The English example of case numbers from WIPO Lex aren't official. They were introduced by WIPO Lex to help non-Chinese readers. Their decimal numbers are identical to the original decimal number in Chinese text.

  Normally only the Chinese number is official. However, languages of minority ethnicities are considered equally official in autonomous regions by law . So non-Chinese case numbers can be official too!   I'm not going to deny your guess, since English is a official language of Hong Kong SAR, a separate custom territory of China. So technically speaking, English case numbers can be official inside China: https://legalref.judiciary.hk/lrs/common/ju/newjudgments.jsp Cheers!

  Sorry for the late response!

  Most scandals have final recognition by court. Such a property (unique number) help readers to reach the judgment texts with a short but unique "code".

  This code is seen in the typical title ( Court Name - Case Number - Document Type ) for full-text documents published by courts in China. Providing such a property help users find the exact judgement text by quoting and Googling it: https://google.com/search?q="（2018）最高法行再26?" (the Parfums Christian Dior (Q3365053) example found by @ ZI Jony ); "（2013）高民?字第1221?" ( Wang Shen v. Google Inc. ; lit. 2023 - High - Civil appeal - 1221 ).

  Wikidata should be compatible to the future, where bots could help reduce human errors by adding necessary data from reliable sources. Such a property help bots adding/correcting information like court and parties involved in a case (or widely speaking, an incident or scandal etc.), and Wikidata items won't be polluted by my manual mistakes for very long time. :D XsLiDian ( talk ) 16:36, 22 May 2024 (UTC) [ reply ]

And Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (Q183080) , Copyright Act 1911 (Q5169215) and Strasbourg Agreement Concerning the International Patent Classification (Q3604191) are not China's legal case (Q2334719) or court decision (Q327000) .   @ BrokenSegue :, case numbers are different for each language. I found (2018）最高法行再26? is related to Parfums Christian Dior (Q3365053) ( EN ZH ). I believe, property proposed for all cases, not only for mainland China (Q7262427) .
