Minnesota has submitted a bid to host the World’s Fair in 2027.

In 2015, the state mounted an attempt to host the 2023 World Expo , as it’s formally known. We were among three finalists; Argentina won.

The new bid, which is awaiting the endorsement of the U.S. Department of Commerce and then the White House, is pretty much the same idea: A big installation in Bloomington near the Mall of America with exhibits extolling a future-looking theme of “Healthy People, Healthy Planet” paid for by a combination of public and private funds.

The final decision for World Expo 2027 rests with the Bureau of International Expositions.

The new bid was announced earlier this month.

“We enjoyed crucial support from a majority of BIE member nations in the vote to include Minnesota’s bid in the final competition for the 2023 Expo,” Minnesota Expo board member Patricia Simmons, a former University of Minnesota regent and trustee at Mayo Clinic, said in the announcement. “As of today, no other country has announced plans to challenge Minnesota’s bid to host in 2027. That is a good place to be.”
