Ginger takes off glasses in farewell to Evans

Scottish media company SMG is set to cut Ginger Television's last connection with former owner Chris Evans by replacing the trademark black-rimmed glasses from the on-screen logo at the end of the production company's programmes.

SMG, which bought Evans's Ginger Media Group for £225m in January 2000, is talking to design consultants Big Picture about a new corporate logo for the TV production arm.

"We've had the current logo for eight years and reassessing it is part of Ginger moving on," said Ginger's head of production, Clare Barton.

"This isn't about denying our heritage. Where we came from is a very important part of what we are as a business. Refreshing our logo is just part of our ambitious plans for 2002."

The dark-rimmed glasses and the accompanying cheeky whistle have appeared at the end of Ginger shows such as Don't Forget Your Toothbrush and TFI Friday.

Recent Ginger shows have included The Real Shirley Bassey and The Ramadan Diaries, both for Channel 4.

Evans is suing SMG for compensation for share options worth £8.6m, which he claims he is owed.

But SMG, which sacked Evans as DJ of the Virgin Radio breakfast show in June for failing to turn up to work, has said it will vigorously contest the legal action and may bring counter claims of its own.
