On 26?28 May, Uzbekistan’s president Shavkat Mirziyoyev received Vladimir Putin, who was on a state visit to what is the most populous and (next to Kazakhstan) the most important country in Central Asia. The Russian delegation included more than 330 people, including ministers, governors and heads of state-owned enterprises.

Last year Turkey’s gas imports fell significantly, from 54.7 bcm in 2022 to 47.5 bcm. This mainly stemmed from declining gas consumption in the country (down more than 6% y/y to 50 bcm), partly as a consequence of the financial crisis it is undergoing.

Georgia: the veto of the ‘law on agents’ is rejected

On 28 May, the Georgian parliament rejected President Salome Zourabichvili’s veto of the law entitled ‘On transparency of foreign influence’, commonly referred to as the ‘law on foreign agents’. 84 MPs representing or supporting the ruling majority voted for this rejection (Georgia’s unicameral parliament has 150 MPs).

Between 25 and 27 May the first elections were held to the Coordination Council (CC), a representative body of Belarusian civil society which has been operating (mainly in exile) in various formats since the presidential elections in 2020. Votes were cast online, using a specially developed application, Belarus ID, available only to Belarusians in exile. Citizens inside the country could use a website indicated by the organisers.

At the forefront of the protests is Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan of the Tavush diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church. He is the leader of the Tavush for the Homeland movement, and had previously not been involved in politics.

However no agreements were signed, and the visit was limited to general statements about the good results of bilateral cooperation.
