  • PHI Starting Pitcher #27
Aaron Nola pitched his fourth career shutout Tuesday with a four-hitter in the Phillies’ 4-0 win over the Mets.
Nola struck out eight and walked none in the 109-pitch outing. The shutout was nearly lost in the ninth, when Jeff McNeil doubled with one out and Starling Marte singled with two. Under other circumstances, McNeil might have tried to score on the hit to left, though it made no sense in the four-run game today. Nola’s shutout is the fifth by an MLB pitcher this year. Teammate Ranger Suarez had one of the others. Nola is now 5-2 with a 3.10 ERA.
  • COL Third Baseman #23
Kris Bryant is on the bench versus a lefty for the second time in the Rockies’ last five games Monday.
Oddly enough, he played in all three games against righties in between the southpaws. We’re not sure if this is some kind of reaction to Bryant starting off 2-for-19 against lefties this season or if maybe something physically is bothering Bryant more when swinging against lefties or if Bud Black has seen him play so infrequently, he simply forgot that Bryant bats right-handed. Bryant has typically been better versus left-handers than right-handers over the course of his career.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #64
Dean Kremer, who is on the IL with a right triceps strain, threw a light side session before Monday’s game.
Kremer has yet to resume facing hitters since going on the injured list last month, so he’s going to be a little while. He was 3-4 with a 4.32 ERA in nine starts before getting hurt.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #54
Robert Gasser is dealing with elbow tightness and soreness, according to manager Pat Murphy, and is getting a second opinion.
That suggests the first opinion wasn’t great. It’s possible this is related to the bone spur he dealt with in March. There were no problems reported for Gasser after his outing Saturday against the White Sox. He’s been looking like a keeper since getting the call last month, going 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in five starts.
  • MIL Center Fielder #11
Despite homering Sunday, Jackson Chourio is out of the lineup for Monday’s game against the Phillies.
Weird. This makes three times in the last five games that Chourio has been excluded from the lineup in favor of Sal Frelick and Blake Perkins. One would think the Brewers would want him playing everyday somewhere. The 20-year-old is hitting .214/.257/.345 with six homers in 180 plate appearances this season.
  • FA Second Baseman #18
Tigers released INF Keston Hiura from Triple-A Toledo.
Hiura was playing first base for Toledo, but that’s going to be Spencer Torkelson’s spot now. Considering that he was one of the best hitters in the International League last year (.960 OPS for Nashville) and had a nice spring, it was surprising Hiura wasn’t faring better for Toledo this year. He came in at .232/.312/.301 in 49 games.
  • DET Third Baseman #13
Tigers selected the contract of OF Justyn-Henry Malloy from Triple-A Toledo.
As reported last night, Spencer Torkelson was sent down to make room. Malloy is making his debut as the Tigers’ DH and No. 6 hitter tonight against the Rangers. He’ll also likely see time in left field. He’s probably not going to help enough in any one category to be valuable in shallow leagues, but he’ll likely sport a nice OBP and produce sufficient power to help the Tigers.
  • DET First Baseman #20
Tigers optioned 1B Spencer Torkelson to Triple-A Toledo.
Torkelson was outstanding down the stretch for the Tigers last season, but he now has 1,318 major league plate appearances with a .218/.296/.386 line and he’s absolutely not making up for it with his defense. Triple-A is where he belongs right now.
  • DET Third Baseman #40
Tigers designated INF Buddy Kennedy for assignment.
The move opens up a spot for Justyn-Henry Malloy on the 40-man roster. If Kennedy, who went 2-for-10 with a homer in an April stint with the Tigers, is again claimed on waivers, it’d be the fourth time that’s happened since last September.
  • NYM Catcher #4
The Mets have decided against activating Francisco Alvarez in time for this weekend’s series in London.
Alvarez has thus far played in three rehab games as he returns from a torn thumb ligament, going 2-for-8 with a homer. The Mets believe it makes more sense for him to stay in the U.S. and continue his rehab than to go to London for two games in five days. If all goes well, Alvarez could be activated next Tuesday.
  • PHI Right Fielder #16
Brandon Marsh feels his hamstring strain is mild and he’s “looking for a pretty quick turnaround.”
Very good news. Marsh will obviously miss the next 10 days after going on the injured list this afternoon. If he misses only the minimum, he’d be out for just seven games, since the Phillies have three days off surrounding their trip to London this weekend.
