Visual History with Lee Grant

Interviewed by: Barbara Kopple

Actor/Director Lee Grant ( Nobody’s Child , Down and Out in America)  discusses her long career in entertainment and transitioning from being an award-winning actress to an award-winning director of documentaries, movies for television and feature films.

Lee Grant discusses her Academy Award-winning documentary, Down and Out In America , and the importance of documentary directors examining overlooked stories, like those of people living in poverty or farmers having their property re-possessed in the 1980's.

Grant recalls the admiration she had for the subjects in her first documentary, The Wilmer 8 , about women who went on strike for sexual discrimination and picketed the bank they worked at through a winter in Minnesota.

Grant tells the story of her first directing experience at the American Film Institute's first ever Directing Workshop For Women.
