The St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, designed by Spanish architect
Santiago Calatrava
, has opened at the
World Trade Center site
in
New York
.
The
church
was built to replace a 19th-century church that was destroyed on 11 September 2001 and is a part of the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site.
Calatrava designed the church, which is located beside the
9/11 memorial
built on the site of the former twin towers, to be a "sanctuary for worship" as well as a reminder of the impact of the 11 September attacks.
"I hope to see this structure serve its purpose as a sanctuary for worship but also as a place for reflection on what the city endured and how it is moving forward," Calatrava said.
Other stories in the latest newsletter include the launch of
