  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Sitting vs. lefty Sunday

Yoshida is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Reds.

With Cincinnati sending southpaw Nick Lodolo to the mound Sunday, the lefty-hitting Yoshida will begin the game in the dugout. He went 0-for-8 over the first two games of the series, and since returning from a thumb injury June 11, he's gone 4-for-34 with one RBI. Rob Refsnyder will serve as the designated hitter Sunday and bat second.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting vs. southpaw

Abreu is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against Cincinnati.

After being activated from the injured list Saturday, Abreu went back to his regular role in right field, going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in a 4-3 win. Against Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo, Abreu will begin Sunday's contest in the dugout while the righty-hitting Tyler O'Neill starts in right field and bats third.

  • Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Back as DH for Sunday

Refsnyder (knee) is serving as the designated hitter and batting second in Sunday's series finale against the Reds.

Right knee soreness kept Refsnyder out of the starting lineup for each of the last three games. He did hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning of Saturday's 4-3 win over Cincinnati after pinch hitting for Wilyer Abreu, and Refsnyder stayed in right field for the last two frames. For the month of June, Refsnyder is slashing .308/.383/.385 with four RBI over 52 at-bats.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Doubles, scores in return

Abreu started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over Cincinnati.

Abreu, who was activated off the 10-day injured list Saturday and reclaimed his regular role as the club's primary right fielder, and Connor Wong hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning, producing Boston's second run and closing the Reds' lead to 3-2. The lefty swinging Abreu was later pinch hit for by Rob Refsnyder in the eighth inning against lefty Justin Wilson. Abreu doesn't get a chance to face a lot of lefties; he has just 28 plate appearances against southpaws and maintains a .450 OPS off them.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Instrumental in win

Duran went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Reds.

Duran made two big plays in the final innings to spur Boston to a win. In the eighth, he tagged up on a shallow foul out and beat Stuart Fairchild's throw to the plate for the go-ahead run. An inning later, Duran victimized Fairchild again, robbing him of a home run by reaching over the fence to record the second out. The scorching hot Duran is batting .385 (20-for-52) over a 12-game hit streak.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Secures 14th save

Jansen earned a a save against the Reds on Saturday, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning.

Jansen worked around a two-out single to close out his 10th straight successful save. The veteran closer has posted a 22:3 K:BB over 18.2 innings during that span while posting a 2.41 ERA. Jansen continues to get the job done in his 15th MLB season -- he's converted 14 of 15 save opportunities while registering a 2.49 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 25.1 frames.

  • Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Allows three runs in 4.1 frames

Pivetta took a no-decision Saturday against Cincinnati, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters over 4.1 innings.

All three of the runs allowed by Pivetta came via the long ball -- Spencer Steer tagged him for a two-run homer in the first inning, and Elly De La Cruz launched a solo shot in the third. Pivetta didn't damage his ERA too dramatically, but he exited after 4.1 innings after racking up 96 pitches. It was the third time over his past six starts that he's failed to complete five frames, though the right-hander also has a pair of seven-inning quality starts during that span.

  • Red Sox's Zack Kelly: Opening Sunday

Kelly will serve as the Red Sox 's opening pitcher for Sunday's game against Cincinnati, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Kelly will make his second start of the season Sunday, likely throwing only 1-to-2 innings before handing the ball off. It's unclear if the Red Sox will commit to a full bullpen game or utilize a bulk reliever, though Chase Anderson would be the likely option to work extended innings behind Kelly if Boston elects to go that route.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Heading to bench Saturday

O'Neill is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Reds, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

O'Neill will hit the bench after going 0-for-7 with two walks over the Red Sox 's previous two contests, but he's been excellent overall since making his return from a three-game absence due to a knee issue earlier this month, slashing .273/.342/.697 since June 12. Even though he finds himself as the odd man out of the Boston outfield Saturday while the team brings Wilyer Abreu (ankle) back from the injured list, O'Neill should continue to handle a near-everyday role for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Optioned to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Dalbec to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

The move corresponds with Wilyer Abreu (ankle) being reinstated from the injured list. Dalbec has struggled at the plate since being recalled by the Red Sox on June 2, going 4-for-30 with four RBI and a 44.1 percent strikeout rate. He'll look to get his swing right in Triple-A, where he is slashing .245/.330/.529 with eight home runs and 21 RBI over 115 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Activated from IL, back in lineup

The Red Sox reinstated Abreu (ankle) from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Abreu will start in right field and bat second against the Reds on Saturday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Abreu landed on the injured list June 4 after twisting his right ankle in the dugout against the Tigers on June 2. He began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday and went 3-for-12 with two solo home runs across his three outings. Prior to his injury, Abreu was slashing .272/.344/.485 with six home runs and 22 RBI while sporting an .829 OPS. To make room for Abreu, utility man Bobby Dalbec was optioned to Triple-A Worcester.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Stuck with loss in quality start

Crawford (3-7) took the loss Friday as the Red Sox fell 5-2 to the Reds, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out seven.

Some defensive misadventures by Boston softened the blow to the right-hander's ERA and allowed him to escape with his third straight quality start and eighth of the season, but it's hard to ignore the issues Crawford has had of late keeping the ball in the park. He's been tagged for multiple homers in three straight outings and served up at least one in seven straight, stumbling to a 5.36 ERA over the latter stretch despite a 1.19 WHIP and 43:12 K:BB through 40.1 innings. Crawford will try to turn things around in his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Blue Jays.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Homers in loss

Wong went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 5-2 loss to Cincinnati.

Wong belted a solo home run in the second inning, his sixth of the season, and extended a hitting streak to 11 games (15-for-39). He's batting .335/.397/.471 for the season. There's no dramatic changes in his contact metrics to explain his breakout, and the BABIP (.395) warning signs are still there, but Wong has managed to avoid regression so far.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Homers, extends hit streak

Duran went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Reds.

Duran hit one of five solo home runs the two teams combined to crush in the first three innings before the game settled into a pitching match. His third-inning homer was the second in as many games and extended a hit streak to 11 contests, during which he's 18-for-48 (.375) with seven extra-base hits, five walks, five steals, seven RBI and 12 runs. Duran is proving that his breakout last season was no fluke. Regardless of whichever outlet is tracking WAR in 2024, Duran is among the top 10: Baseball Reference (3.9, T-6th), ESPN (3.9, T-7th) or FanGraphs (3.1, T-9th).

  • Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Battling knee soreness

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that Refsnyder is dealing with right knee soreness, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Cora doesn't think the injury is serious, but Refsnyder hasn't been in the Red Sox lineup for two consecutive games, though it's unclear if that's due to entirely to the injury. With Wilyer Abreu (ankle) expected to rejoin the active roster Saturday and Masataka Yoshida healthy, Refsnyder's run of consistent playing time was set to come to an end anyway. Once he moves past the knee issue, Refsnyder is likely to see most of his starts against left-handed pitching.
