More than a week after the 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards were taped in Atlanta, the annual show honoring the best in rap aired Tuesday night (October 9).
The show started off strong with a performance by
Wiz Khalifa
. After rocking his single, “Work Hard, Play Hard,” Wiz was joined by
Young Jeezy
and
Juicy J
for the remix of the track and J’s club R&B/Hip-Hop Songs hit, “Bandz A Make Her Dance.”

Other performers of the night included
Meek Mill
, Kirko Bangz,
Kendrick Lamar
,
2 Chainz
,
T.I.
, Future,
Diddy
,
Machine Gun Kelly
, Los,
French Montana
, Uncle Luke (who of course had to chime in on “Pop That,” the remake to 2 Live Crew’s “Pop That Pussy”), and last but least,
Rick Ross
and
Omarion
.
Omarion’s moves during his “Ice Cold” performance got the ‘net talking and
gif-making
. Maybach O took advantage of the love (and hate) and released a dance freestyle shortly after the awards aired. Yet another good move, O.
A very special moment took place when artists of Violator Management came together to pay tribute to the late Chris Lighty.
Q-Tip
and Phife Dawg of
A Tribe Called Quest
and
Fat Joe
and
50 Cent
put aside long-time beefs to grace the stage together. They were joined by
Missy Elliott
and
Busta Rhymes
to perform some of their classics and share a few words on Lighty.
As with past BET Hip-Hop Awards shows, the cyphers were a highlight of the night. BET gathered some of fans’ favorite rappers into groups (cliques (Ruff Ryders, Grand Hustle), rising vs. veterans, geographical domain (West coast)) to spit some of their coldest rhymes.
Amongst those that rapped in the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2012 cyphers were Grand Hustle (T.I., Trae Tha Truth, Chip, Iggy Azalea, B.o.B.), Mac Miller, Mystikal, Schoolboy Q, Hopsin, Jay Bird the Purdi Boi, Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, Ab Soul, Sarkodie, West coast (Xzibit, YG, Kurupt, E-40, DJ Quik, Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg), Angel Haze,
Joey Bada
$$, Dricky Graham, Childish Gambino, A$AP Rocky, and Ruff Ryders (Murda Mook, Cassidy, Eve, and DMX).
The show brought the who’s who of the rap game in one building for special performances, such as the Chris Lighty tribute, and deserving wins, despite the circling reports of a brawl between Rozay and Jeezy.
