Newsbeat has won the best news and current affairs programme at this year's Sony Radio Academy Awards.

It is the first gold award for BBC Radio 1's news service, which was launched in 1973.

Newsbeat news editor Rod McKenzie said: "We care about the audience, we care about Radio 1 and we care about providing a great news service.

"I've got a brilliant team and this is a wonderful reward for everything we've done since 1973."

Newsbeat's winning Sony Radio Academy Award citation read: "Real investigative journalism, which is well tailored with audience interaction. They don't 'sell-out' for quick wins and easy topics."

Radio 1 also won best music feature (The story of Ed Sheeran), best documentary (Bruising Silence) and Edith Bowman's review show won gold for use of multiplatform with The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw taking silver in the same category.

The awards event, regarded as the Oscars of the UK radio industry, introduced a new Sony golden headphones public vote to find the nation's favourite presenters, with the first award going to Radio 1 newcomers Dan Howell and Phil Lester.

Greg James won silver in the best entertainment programme category with BBC Radio 1Xtra's Charlie Sloth taking bronze.

Radio 1's Hackney Weekend also came second in the best coverage of a live event category.

The station also won a silver for best community programme for Crossroads - a show presented by Tim Westwood about life in prison.
