OAH Issues an Open Letter to the Biden Administration on the 1776 Report and the "Future of the Past”

The OAH calls on the Biden Administration to enact, support, and fund multiple efforts to broaden the research, writing, teaching, and public discussion of the complicated history of American democracy, including the institution of slavery and the dispossession of Indigenous people. We recommend establishing a bipartisan commission tasked with examining the founding of our nation, which should examine the importance of 1776 and the country’s founding documents, but with the crucial difference of looking at this critical moment in the nation’s past from multiple perspectives and exploring the multiple ways the nation’s founding was recorded and later interpreted and understood.

The Call for Proposals for the 2022 OAH Annual Meeting, A Hybrid Conference on American History is now open until Wednesday, February 17. Themed on Indigenous/American Pasts and Futures, the in-person portion of the conference will take place at the Sheraton Boston Hotel, Boston, MA from March 31 to April 3, 2022.
