New E-Mail and Text Alerting System for George Washington Bridge Users
Users of the George Washington Bridge sidewalk can now have free alerts about sidewalk closures sent to a cellular phone, PDA, pager, or e-mail account. Simply select the "Bicyclists/Pedestrian" as "Customer Type" on our Bridges and Tunnels Alerts subscription page.

Hours

Construction projects periodically change which sidewalk is open.

Bicyclists using the sidewalk are asked to walk their bikes for the safety of all sidewalk users. Bicyclists who choose to ride are asked to exercise caution and ride slowly. Pedestrians have the right-of-way at all times.

Users of the GWB sidewalk are encouraged to sign up for Bridge & Tunnel Alerts at http://www.panynj.gov/alerts . Select the "Bicyclists/Pedestrian" Customer Type to receive sidewalk closure alerts via text or email.

Directions to the Sidewalks

Directions to New York Entrances

The south sidewalk entrance is located near the corner of West 177th Street and Cabrini Boulevard. The north sidewalk entrance is located near the corner of West 179th Street and Cabrini Boulevard. You may reach both sidewalks from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station in Upper Manhattan. The bus station is located between West 178th and West 179th streets and Fort Washington Avenue and Broadway.

South Sidewalk-Pedestrians

From the Fort Washington Avenue entrance of the Bus Station, pedestrians can reach the south sidewalk by proceeding to the corner of West 178th Street, making a right, continuing two blocks to Cabrini Boulevard, and proceeding approximately 100 feet. Entrance to the sidewalk will be on your left.

South Sidewalk-Bicyclists

Bicyclists should proceed south on Fort Washington Avenue to West 177th Street, turn right and proceed for two blocks to Cabrini Boulevard. Make a right turn and proceed on Cabrini Boulevard for one block. Make a left turn onto the sidewalk and proceed approximately 100 feet. The ramp to the south sidewalk will be on your left.

North Sidewalk-Pedestrians and Bicyclists (Normally Closed)

To reach the north sidewalk from the Fort Washington Avenue entrance of the bus station, proceed to the corner of West 179th. Make a right turn and proceed two blocks to Cabrini Boulevard.

Directions to New Jersey Entrances

In New Jersey, the entrances to the north and south sidewalks are located on Hudson Terrace in Fort Lee.

From the intersection of Lemoine Avenue and Bruce Reynolds Blvd. (Bridge Plaza South), Hudson Terrace can be reached by proceeding east on Bruce Reynolds Blvd. (toward the bridge). Hudson Terrace is the cross street at the "T" intersection at the end of Bruce Reynolds Boulevard. Cross Hudson Terrace at this intersection, make a left and proceed north. Go about two blocks, and you will find the entrance ramp to the south sidewalk on your right (before the overpass that leads to the bridge). The entrance ramp to the north sidewalk is on the other side of the bridge overpass.
