A special pair of trains is operating in the mountainous areas of the Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Liangshan, China’s southwest Sichuan Province. From Panzhihua City to Yuexi County, the route of train No.5633/4 passes extremely poor areas, and functions like a bus, stopping 26 times, almost every ten minutes, on the 353-kilometer journey.
In order to be convenient to the mountain residents, the trains have a special arrangement to allow passengers to carry livestock with them. The lowest ticket price is only two yuan (around 0.3 US dollars) and it remains unchanged for the past 22 years. #train

With World Book Day just around the corner, the Xinhua Bookstore outlet in Bengbu, east China’s Anhui Province, has undergone an unusual makeover, giving book lovers a railway theme to whisk them off on their own literary journeys.

Rails, switches, signals and old-fashioned “green train” car seats can now be found throughout the three-storey bookstore.

As China’s largest state-owned nationwide bookstore chain, Xinhua Bookstore celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.

With the development of online book sales, Xinhua Bookstore has been forced to adapt to a changing industry. Many of the stores across the country have been gradually closed because of declining customer numbers.
