Public Power for the Valley

TVA is committed to providing clean, reliable, affordable public power to all corners of the Tennessee Valley. We distribute it in three ways: to local power companies, who sell our energy to residential and business consumers throughout the region; directly to large industrial customers and federal installations; and to some off-system utilities.

Local Power Companies

TVA works in partnership with 154 individual local power companies to keep safe, clean, reliable and affordable public power flowing to homes and businesses throughout the seven-state Tennessee Valley region. These local power companies—both municipal utilities and regional cooperatives—purchase power from TVA and distribute it to consumers within their designated service areas, which are illustrated in the map below.

The Tennessee Public Power Association, or TVPPA , is a nonprofit organization that represents the interests of consumer-owned electric utilities operating within the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) service area. TVPPA members include both municipal and electric cooperatives, and they serve more than 9 million customers in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Kentucky, North Carolina and Virginia. TVPPA also provides TVA with suggestions and advice on existing and possible research and development projects and in many cases provides venues for demonstration research projects carried out in partnership with TVA.

Sales of energy through local power companies account for approximately 90.3 percent of TVA’s total revenue.

Directly Served Customers

A total of 51 large, energy-intensive industrial customers count on TVA for a reliable stream of affordable power, as do six federal installations. These directly served customers include producers of primary metals, chemicals, industrial gases, forest products and rolled aluminum products.

The Tennessee Valley Industrial Committee ( TVIC ) is an organization representing 41 of the most electricity-intensive directly served customers. These companies operate 54 facilities in the TVA service area. They employ more than 30,000 people in the Tennessee Valley, predominantly in high-wage and salaried positions. TVIC members pay around $1.7 billion per year for electricity and have a vested interest in maintaining reliable, affordable power.

Sales to these 56 directly served industrial customers account for about 8.4 percent of TVA’s revenue.

Off-System Utilities

Twelve southeastern U.S. utilities buy power from TVA on the interchange market, accounting for 1.3 percent of TVA’s total revenue.
