Windies won six of their seven ICC CWCQ 2018 matches to seal their place at the World Cup

Cricket World Cup: The Final 10

CWC, feature

The lowdown on each of the 10 teams that will competing at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and Wales.

With Windies and Afghanistan confirmed as the two countries to progress from the Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, we take a look at the final roll call.?

AFGHANISTAN

Afghanistan's World Cup dream looked all but over after they opened the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe with three successive defeats to Scotland, Zimbabwe and Hong Kong. They snuck through to the Super Sixes needing to win all their games in that phase, while relying on other results going their way. It all came together, as tense victories over UAE and Ireland confirmed their second appearance at the World Cup.?

The Afghans will start the tournament as underdogs but with a potent spin attack, led by the brilliant leggie Rashid Khan, they will fancy their chances of springing a surprise or two.?

AUSTRALIA

After suffering defeats at the hands of England, Pakistan and New Zealand in successive series, Australia will need to dramatically improve their form if they are to retain their World Cup crown and lift the trophy for a sixth time.

In their most recent defeat ? a chastening 4-1 drubbing at home against old rivals England ? the Aussies were lacking firepower with the bat, with Aaron Finch the standout player in an otherwise disappointing series for the hosts.?

BANGLADESH

After a run of five consecutive series victories across 2015 and 2016, the Tigers have lost their way, losing three and drawing one of their last four bilateral series. In the recent home tri-series, also featuring Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, they started promisingly before being thrashed in the final by the Sri Lankans.?

Bangladesh's record in England is also a concern as they look ahead to the World Cup ? they have only won four of 18 ODIs played on English soil.?

ENGLAND?

England are a side reborn under Eoin Morgan's aggressive leadership, and entirely unrecognisable from the side that exited the last World Cup so limply at the group stage. They bat deep, and powerfully, and have a well-balanced bowling attack.?

Home advantage means they will be regarded as favourites by many, but their shock defeat to Pakistan in the semi-final of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy showed they are still far from the finished product and their batting remains susceptible to a collapse on slower decks.?

INDIA

Virat Kohli's India will take some stopping. They possess a formidable batting line-up, spearheaded by their inimitable captain who continues to elevate 50-over batting to a level never previously witnessed. Their bowling, too, offers something for every occasion, with an impressive stable of quicks, two high-quality finger spinners in R Aswhin and Ravindra Jadeja, and the wrist-spin of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav ? who proved in the recent series in South Africa they can prosper outside of the subcontinent.?

However, their capitulation at the hands of a rampant Pakistan side in last year's ICC Champions Trophy final proved they are far from indestructible, particularly when their batsmen are faced with a swinging ball.?

NEW ZEALAND

MRF Tyres ICC ODI Ranking: 4
Series form guide: LWWLL

Runners-up at the last edition, the Kiwis should find conditions in England to their liking as they bid for their first World Cup title, with new-ball partners Trent Boult and Tim Southee in particular likely to relish the early movement in the air and off the pitch. They are tightly drilled unit, expertly marshalled by the prolific Kane Williamson, and Ross Taylor appears to be getting better with age.

The depth of their batting remains a concern ? a weakness that was highlighted during the recent home series defeat to England ? but New Zealand rarely disappoint at world events.?

PAKISTAN

Anything is possible with Pakistan, as they showed at last summer's ICC Champions Trophy. Having very nearly failed to qualify for the tournament, and after being thrashed by India in their opening fixture, Sarfraz Ahmed's side found form at just the right time, upsetting England in the last four before Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Amir inspired them to a huge win in the final over their arch-rivals.?

Pakistan stuns India to win Champions trophy 2017
Pakistan nearly missed out on qualification for the Champions Trophy altogether and began their campaign with a heavy loss to arch rivals India. But then victories over world No. 1 South Africa, Sri Lanka and hosts England set up a tantalising re-match against India in the Final at The Oval. Not to be denied on this occasion, Pakistan set an imposing total of 338, led by a century to Fakhar Zaman before Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali combined to bowl India out for 158 to deliver an unlikely but memorable triumph.

They followed that tournament victory with a 5-0 whitewash over Sri Lanka before slumping to a demoralising defeat by the same scoreline in New Zealand, again demonstrating their unpredictability.??

SOUTH AFRICA

MRF Tyres ICC ODI Ranking: 2
Series form guide: LWLWW

Can South Africa finally end their long wait for a first World Cup title? They have the quality in their ranks but last summer's ICC Champions Trophy was the latest example of the Proteas failing to do themselves justice in major tournaments.?

They arrived in England last year with seven wins in their last eight series but were knocked out in the group stage and their most recent 50-over outing was a 5-1 humbling on home soil at the hands of India, as their frailties against spin were ruthlessly exposed.?

SRI LANKA

MRF Tyres ICC ODI Ranking: 8
Series form guide: LLLLD

Their recent form in bilateral series is very poor, with no victory in their last eight contests, but the tri-series in Bangladesh in January will have given their confidence a much-needed boost, as they overcame the hosts and Zimbabwe to win the tournament.?

After a difficult spell following the retirements of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, there are signs that this relatively inexperienced group are starting to find their way.

WINDIES

Jason Holder's side didn't have things all their own way at the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe, losing to Afghanistan and sneaking past Scotland on DLS method in a match that was delicately poised before the rain came down in Harare.?

The West Indies are IN!

Nonetheless, the fact that the two-time World Cup winners have overcome a difficult hurdle should galvanise this talented squad, who had to watch from afar last year after failing to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy.?
