Senate elections are usually held concurrently with House of Representatives elections.
However, Senate-only elections have been held in 1953, 1964, 1967 and 1970. House-only elections have been held in 1929, 1954, 1963, 1966, 1969 and 1972.
Because senators serve six-year terms with half of the senators in each state facing the electorate every three years, each Senate poll is a half-Senate election.
The only exceptions to this have been the double dissolution elections of 1914, 1951, 1974, 1975, 1983 and 1987. In these elections, the Senate was dissolved with all places in each state and territory up for election. To restore the rotation of elections, half of the senators served three-year terms, whilst the other half served six-year terms.
