Australian federal, state and territory election dates are sometimes fixed in advance and sometimes at the discretion of the Prime Minister, Premier or Chief Minister.
A majority of the States and Territories have fixed-term parliaments but the Federal Government still has the traditional system whereby the Prime Minister chooses the election date, subject to constitutional restraints and the provisions of the Electoral Act.
