1951 DELHI, INDIA
The first Asian Games were held in Delhi, India, 4 ? 11 March, 1951. With 4 1 participants from 11 National Olympics Committees (Afghanistan, Burma Ceylon, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Nepal, The Philippines, Singapore and Thailand), this first Asian Games were officially opened by President Rajendra Prasa at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium, featuring 6 sports branches: athletics, aquatics (swimming, diving, and water polo), basketball cycling (road cycling and track cycling), football, and weightlifting. A total of 169 medals were awarded.
1954 MANILA, PHILIPPINES
The second Asian Games were held in Manila, Philippines from 24 ? 9 May 1954. With 970 participants from 19 National Olympics Committees, President Ramon Magsaysay at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Malate, Manila, officially opened the second Asian Games. Featuring 8 sports branches: athletics, aquatics (swimming, diving, and water polo), basketball, boxing, football, shooting, weight lifting, and wrestling. A total of 229 medals were awarded.
1958 TOKYO, JAPAN
The third Asian Games were held in Tokyo, Japan, May 24th ? 1st of June 1958. With 1,820 athletes representing 20 Asian National Olympics Committees, this third Asian Games were officially opened by President HM Emperor Hirohito at Olympic Stadium, featuring 12 sports branches: athletics, aquatics (swimming, diving, and water polo), basketball, cycling (road cycling and track cycling), field hockey, football, shooting, table tennis, tennis, volley ball, wrestling, and weightlifting. A total of 350 medals were awarded.
1962 JAKARTA, INDONESIA
1962, it is the first Asian Games for Indonesia to become the host city. August 24, the 4 th Asian Games officially opened by President Soekarno at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. With 1,460 athletes representing 17 Asian National Olympics Committees, featuring 13 sports branches; athletics, aquatics (swimming, diving, and water polo), basketball, boxing, cycling (road cycling and track cycling), field hockey, football, shooting, table tennis, tennis, volley ball, and wrestling. A total of 372 medals were awarded.
1966 BANGKOK, THAILAND
The 5th Asian Games also known as the?V Asiad, held from December 9, 1966 to December 20, 1966 in?Bangkok,?Thailand. With 1,945 athletes representing 18 Asian National Olympics Committees, King Bhumibol Adulyadej officially opened this third Asian Games at Suphachalasai Stadium. Featuring 14 sports branches: athletics, aquatics (swimming, diving, and water polo), basketball, badminton, boxing, cycling, field hockey, football, shooting, table tennis, tennis, volley ball, wrestling, and weightlifting. A total of 460 medals were awarded.
1970 BANGKOK, THAILAND
The?6th?Asian Games?were held from December 9, 1970 to December 20, 1970 in?Bangkok,?Thailand. Originally, South Korea?was selected to host the 6th Games but it was declined due to both financial reasons and security threats. For A total number of 2,400 athletes, came from 18 countries, the third Asian Games were officially opened by King Bhumibol Adulyadej at Suphachalasai Stadium. Featuring 15 sport branches: athletics, aquatics (swimming, diving, and water polo), basketball, badminton, boxing, cycling, field hockey, football, sailing, shooting, table tennis, tennis, volley ball, wrestling, and weightlifting. A total of 423 medals were awarded.
1974 TEHRAN, IRAN
The 7th Asian Games were held in Tehran, Iran, September 1st ? September 16th 1974. With 3,010 athletes representing 25 Asian National Olympics Committees. Syah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi at Aryamehr Stadium officially opened the 7th Asian Games. Featuring 18 sports branches: athletics, aquatics (swimming, diving, and water polo), basketball, badminton, boxing, cycling, fencing, field hockey, football, gymnastic, shooting, table tennis, tennis, volley ball, wrestling, and weightlifting, a total of 609 medals were awarded.
1978 BANGKOK, THAILAND
The 8th Asian Games were held from December 9 to December 20, 1978 in Bangkok, Thailand. Originally, the host city was Singapore but Singapore dropped its plan to host the Games due to financial problems. And then Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan was decided to host the 8th Games. But Islamabad also dropped its plan to host the Asian Games due to conflicts with Bangladesh and India. King Bhumibol Adulyadej officially opened this third Asian Games at Suphachalasai Stadium. A total number of 3.842 athletes, coming from 25 countries, had competed featuring 21 sports. 626 medals were awarded at the 8th Asian Games.
1982 DELHI, INDIA
The 9th Asian Games were held from November 19, 1982 to December 4, 1 82 in Delhi, India. An incredible 74 Asian and Asian Games records were broken. This was also the first Asiad to be held under the aegis of the Olympic Council of Asia. A total of 4.595 athletes from 33 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in these games, competing in 21 sports (handball equestrian, rowing and golf were included for the first time fencing and bowling were excluded). President Zail Singh had officially opened the 9th Asian Games at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
1986 SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA
The 10th Asian Games were held from September 20, 1986, to October 5, 1 86, in Seoul, South Korea. A total of 4.839 athletes from 27 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in these games, competing in 24 sports includes archery, equestrian, fencing, handball, judo, and rowing. President Chun Doo-hwan had officially opened the 10th Asian Games at the Olympic Stadium, and 848 medals were awarded.
1990 BEIJING, CHINA
The 11th Asian Games were held from September 22, 1990 to October 7, 1990 in Beijing, China.A total of 6,122 athletes from 36 National Olympic Committees(NOCs) participated in these games, competing in 27 sports and 2 demonstration sports (baseball and sot tennis). President Yang Shangkun had officially opened the 11th Asian Games at Workers Stadium.
1994 HIROSHIMA, JEPANG
The 1994 Asian Games also known as XII Asiad were held from October 2 to October 16, 1994 in Hiroshima, Japan. The main theme of this edition was to promote peace and harmony among Asian nations. The host emphasized it because the venue was the site of the first atomic bomb attack 49 years earlier. Due to the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq was suspended from the games. There were a total number of 6.828 athletes and officials involved, from 42 countries, with 1.079 medals awarded.
1998 BANGKOK, THAILAND
The 13th Asian Games were held from December 6 to December 20, 1998 in Bangkok, Thailand. A total of 6.554 athletes from 41 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in these games, competing in 36 sports includes canoeing, kabbadi, sepaktakraw, and squash. King Bhumibol Adulyadej had officially opened the 13th Asian Games at the Rajamangala National Stadium, and 1.225 medals were awarded.
2002 BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA
The 2002 Asian Games, also known as XIV Asian is a multi-sport event held in Busan, South Korea from September 29 to October 14, 2002. Busan is the second city in South Korea, after Seoul in 1986 to host the Games. 7.711 athletes from 44 countries contested a total of 419 events in 38 sports. Kim Dae-jung officially opened the 14th Asian Games at Aryamehr Stadium. Featuring 38 sports branches and 1.350 medals were awarded.
2006 DOHA, QATAR
The 15th Asian Games were held from December 1 to December 16, 2006 in Doha, Qatar. A total of 9.520 athletes from 45 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in these games, competing in 39 sports includes body building, softball, soft tennis, and wushu. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani had officially opened the 15th Asian Games at the Khalifa International Stadium, and 1.393 medals were awarded.
2010 GUANGZHOU, CHINA
The 16th Asian Games were held in Guangzhou, China, November 12-11, 2010. With 9.704 participants from 45 National Olympics Committees, Premier Wen Jiabao, officially opened this 16th Asian Games at the Guangdong Olympic Stadium. Featuring 42 sports branches, a total of 1.577 medals were awarded.
2014 INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA
The 17th Asian Games were held in Incheon, South Korea, September 19, October 4, 2014. With 9.501 participants from 45 National Olympics Committees Asian Games were officially opened by President Park Geun-hye at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium, featuring 36 sports branches, and total of 1.454 medals were awarded.
