Buffy the Vampire Slayer: ranking the cast's careers since it ended 13 years ago

Buffy vs Willow vs Xander vs Giles vs Spike...

It's been 13 long years since we last caught up with the Scooby Gang (unless you count the comics).

Joss Whedon's iconic fantasy drama is still a cult favourite and holds up after all these years, making huge stars out of its core cast and creatives. But what have Buffy, Xander, Willow and co been up to since? Let's find out who benefitted the most from their time in Sunnydale.

20. Kristine Sutherland (Joyce)

Kristine played Buffy's mother for the first five seasons before being killed off, but came back a couple of times for guest appearances. Since the show wrapped, she attended a photography course at the Santa Monica College and set up a studio specialising in portraits. She's stayed quiet in the acting world, appearing in a handful of smaller projects.

19. Amber Benson (Tara)

Amber may not have appeared in any particularly massive projects since being killed off in Buffy , but she has kept very busy as an actor, director and writer. Along with several comic projects, she directed the movies Chance (2002), Lovers, Liars and Lunatics (2006) and Drones (2010), the latter alongside Buffy co-star Adam Busch. Her last notable acting role was as a stripper in an episode of Sarah Michelle Gellar's Ringer in 2011. Last year, she said on Reddit that she was "an actress in a former life".

18. Adam Busch (Warren)

5. Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy)

Sarah Michelle Gellar, then and now

Sarah might always be best known for playing kickass Buffy (and that's no bad thing), but that doesn't mean she hasn't been busy since the show ended. She hasn't had the best luck with finding a new TV success – she led the cast of the criminally underrated Ringer in 2011 and The Crazy Ones opposite Robin Williams in 2013.

Whilst Buffy was on air she starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2 and Cruel Intentions , and will reprise her role from the latter in a TV version this year. She also led the cast of instalments of horror The Grudge and the Scooby-Doo series.

4. David Boreanaz (Angel)

Heartthrob David was so popular as Buffy's vampire lover that he got given his own spinoff, which lasted for five seasons from 1999 to 2004. A year after Angel ended, he landed the co-lead role of Seeley Booth in crime drama Bones , which outlasted his other series – it's currently on its 12th and final run.

3. Alyson Hannigan (Willow)

Alyson Hannigan, then and now

Alyson may not have appeared in that many projects over the years compared to others, but boy she knows how to pick them. Whilst playing bookworm-turned-witch Willow, she starred in the American Pie film series as kinky band geek Michelle, returning in 2012's American Reunion . She had arguably an even bigger TV role as Lily Aldrin in How I Met Your Mother from 2005 to 2014.

2. Danny Strong (Jonathan)

Danny Strong, then and now

You may not have realised this, but Danny has come a long way since playing geek Jonathan in Buffy . He is now an award-winning screenwriter and producer, writing the screenplays for Recount , the HBO adaptation Game Change , Lee Daniels' The Butler , and the two-part finale of The Hunger Games film trilogy, Mockingjay – Part 1 and Mockingjay – Part 2 . He is also a co-creator, executive producer and writer for Empire .

Meanwhile, he continues to act from time to time, appearing in Gilmore Girls, Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, How I Met Your Mother and Grey's Anatomy . He has won two Emmy Awards, two Writers Guild of America Awards, a Producers Guild of America Award, and a NAACP Image Award. Well done that man.

1. Joss Whedon (creator)

We know we normally stick to the cast, but this guy is too much of a big deal to leave out, and it's all thanks to Buffy . He is the founder of Mutant Enemy Productions and co-founder of Bellwether Pictures, and also created Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Agents of SHIELD .

In film, he created and directed the Firefly film spinoff Serenity, co-wrote and directed the Internet mini-series Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, co-wrote and produced horror comedy The Cabin in the Woods, and wrote and directed the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films The Avengers and its sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron . He also brought together several of his Whedonverse folk for the 2012 adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing .
