The 740, title added entry field, is used to record analytic title added entries for independent works contained within the item and titles of related works.
In
MLP Processing
these include:
- titles of accompanying material
- original title when item is reprinted under a new title
- serial titles when item is an off print
- title of original for translations
- titles of items in a collection
Full Level Processing:
All of the types of titles listed above must be recorded as uniform titles in fields
240
and
X30
rather than in field 740. A referral is required.
For varying forms of the title proper and titles from sources other than the chief source of information use field
246
.
The source of information for the 740 field is the entire item.
Capitalize words in the 740 according to the capitalization rules used for
245.
Use punctuation rules found in
245.
All 740s must be "justified" by their presence in another descriptive field of the record (e.g., 245) or by the presence of an explanatory note (
5XX
).
MLP Only: Original, related or translated title
Note that in full level processing, original, related and translated titles will be handled on copy as uniform titles rather than as a title added entry.
