This article is from British Journal of Cancer, volume 107.AbstractBackground:: The Nottinghamshire Lymphoma Registry contains the details of all the patients diagnosed with lymphoma (since 1 January 1973) within a defined geographical area with a population of 1.1 million. It was therefore possible to study the outcome of treatment for Hodgkin's disease for three 10-year cohorts (1973?1982, 1983?1992 and 1993?2002).The aims of the study were to compare survival time among the three...

This article is from The Journal of General Virology, volume 92.AbstractDespite extensive research, many details about the structure and functions of hepatitis C virus (HCV) glycoproteins E1 and E2 are not fully understood, and their crystal structure remains to be determined. We applied linker-scanning mutagenesis to generate a panel of 34 mutants, each containing an insertion of 5 aa at a random position within the E1E2 sequence. The mutated glycoproteins were analysed by using a range of...

One of the first stages of planet formation is the growth of small planetesimals and their accumulation into large planetesimals and planetary embryos. This early stage occurs much before the dispersal of most of the gas from the protoplanetary disk. Due to their different aerodynamic properties, planetesimals of different sizes/shapes experience different drag forces from the gas at these stage. Such differential forces produce a wind-shearing effect between close by, different size...

We construct a three-dimensional lattice model for biological gels in which straight lines of bonds correspond to filamentous semi-flexible polymers and lattice sites, which are exactly four-fold coordinated, to crosslinks. With only stretching central forces between nearest neighbors, this lattice is sub-isostatic with an extensive number of zero modes; but all of its elastic constants are nonzero, and its elastic response is affine. Removal of bonds with probability $1-p$ leads to a lattice...

Starting from the Weyl gauge formulation of quantum electrodynamics (QED), the formalism of quantum-mechanical gauge fixing is extended using techniques from nonrelativistic QED. This involves expressing the redundant gauge degrees of freedom through an arbitrary functional of the gauge-invariant transverse degrees of freedom. Particular choices of functional can be made to yield the Coulomb gauge and Poincar\'{e} gauge representations. The Hamiltonian we derive therefore serves as a good...

In this article we propose a new method, which we name 'quartet neighbor joining', or 'quartet-NJ', to infer an unrooted species tree on a given set of taxa T from empirical distributions of unrooted quartet gene trees on all four-taxon subsets of T. In particular, quartet-NJ can be used to estimate a species tree on T from distributions of gene trees on T. The quartet-NJ algorithm is conceptually very similar to classical neighbor joining, and its statistical consistency under the multispecies...

Motivated by recent studies which show that topological phases may emerge in strongly correlated electron systems, we theoretically study the strong electron correlation effect in a three-dimensional topological insulator, which effective Hamiltonian can be described by the Wilson fermions. We adopt 1/r long-range Coulomb interaction as the interaction between the bulk electrons. Based on the U(1) lattice gauge theory, the strong coupling expansion is applied by assuming that the effective...

Several research projects have shown that Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) is practical today in terms of performance. Deficiencies in other aspects might still be an obstacle to a more wide-spread deployment in real-world applications. One of these aspects is an over-all security architecture beyond the low-level protocol. This paper proposes the security architecture SecureSMART, which provides dynamic key distribution, internal and external integrity and confidentiality measures, as well as...

This monograph is an updated and extended version of the author's PhD thesis. It consists of an introductory text followed by two separate parts which are loosely related but may be read independently of each other. In Part I we analyze certain hyperbolic structures arising when studying gravity in the vicinity of a spacelike singularity (the "BKL-limit"). In this limit, spatial points decouple and the dynamics exhibits ultralocal behaviour which may be described in terms of a...

The overlap fermion propagator is calculated on 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion gauge configurations on 16^3 x 32, 24^3 x 64 and 32^3 x 64 lattices. With HYP smearing and low eigenmode deflation, it is shown that the inversion of the overlap operator can be expedited by ~ 20 times for the 16^3 x 32 lattice and ~ 80 times for the 32^3 x 64 lattice. Through the study of hyperfine splitting, we found that the O(m^2a^2) error is small and these dynamical fermion lattices can adequately accommodate...

We construct a weakly complete flat surface in hyperbolic 3-space having a pair of hyperbolic Gauss maps both of whose images are contained in an arbitrarily given open disc in the ideal boundary of H^3. This construction is accomplished as an application of the minimal surface theory. This looks an interesting phenomenon if one comparing the fact that there are no complete minimal (resp. constant mean curvature one) surfaces in R^3 (resp. H^3) having bounded Gauss maps (resp. bounded...

Boykin and Jackson recently introduced a property of countable Borel equivalence relations called Borel boundedness, which they showed is closely related to the unions problem for hyperfinite relations. In this paper, we introduce a family of properties of countable Borel equivalence relations which correspond to combinatorial cardinal invariants of the continuum in the same way that Borel boundedness corresponds to the bounding number $\mathfrak{b}$. We analyze some of the basic behavior of...

A subset of blazars emit TeV gamma rays which annihilate and pair produce on the extragalactic background light. We have argued in Broderick et al. (2011, Paper I) that plasma beam instabilities can dissipate the pairs' energy locally. This heats the intergalactic medium and dramatically increases its entropy after redshift z~2, with important implications for structure formation: (1) This suggests a scenario for the origin of the cool core (CC)/non-cool core (NCC) bimodality in galaxy clusters...

The normalized non-dimensional von K\'arm\'an-Howarth equation for isotropic homogeneous decaying and forced steady turbulence is integrated to obtain expressions for the dissipation rate coefficient $C_{\epsilon}=(L \epsilon)/< u^2 >^{3/2}$, where $L$ denotes the longitudinal integral length scale, $\epsilon$ the mean dissipation rate and $< u^2 >$ the mean variance of the longitudinal velocity fluctuations. For decaying turbulence the final exact expressions for...

Linked-twist maps are area-preserving, piece-wise diffeomorphisms, defined on a subset of the torus. They are non-uniformly hyperbolic generalisations of the well-known Arnold Cat Map. We show that a class of canonical examples have polynomial decay of correlations for \alpha-H\"{o}lder observables, of order 1/n.

Biochemical reaction systems in mesoscopic volume, under sustained environmental chemical gradient(s), can have multiple stochastic attractors. Two distinct mechanisms are known for their origins: ($a$) Stochastic single-molecule events, such as gene expression, with slow gene on-off dynamics; and ($b$) nonlinear networks with feedbacks. These two mechanisms yield different volume dependence for the sojourn time of an attractor. As in the classic Arrhenius theory for temperature dependent...

We present results from the analysis of Fe I 630 nm measurements of the quiet Sun taken with the spectropolarimeter of the Hinode satellite. Two data sets with noise levels of 1.2{\times}10-3 and 3{\times}10-4 are employed. We determine the distribution of field strengths and inclinations by inverting the two observations with a Milne-Eddington model atmosphere. The inversions show a predominance of weak, highly inclined fields. By means of several tests we conclude that these properties cannot...

We report on the effect of exposure to atmospheric conditions on the THz conductivity of thin films of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$. We find: 1) two contributions of mobile charge carriers to the THz conductivity immediately after growth, and 2) the spectral weight of the smaller of these decays significantly over a period of several days as the film is exposed to ambient conditions, while the other remains relatively constant. We associate the former with a bulk response, and the...

For this purpose we consider the Asakura-Oosawa model in the presence of a quenched matrix of colloidal hard spheres. We study the dependence of the demixing curve on the parameters that characterize the quenched matrix, fixing the polymer-to-colloid size ratio to 0.8. We find that, to a large extent, demixing curves depend only on a single parameter f, which...

Let $C^*(E)$ be the graph $C^*$-algebra associated to a graph E and let J be a gauge invariant ideal in $C^*(E)$. We compute the cyclic six-term exact sequence in $K$-theory of the associated extension in terms of the adjacency matrix associated to $E$. The ordered six-term exact sequence is a complete stable isomorphism invariant for several classes of graph $C^*$-algebras, for instance those containing a unique proper nontrivial ideal. This paper considers a portfolio optimization problem in which asset prices are represented by SDEs driven by Brownian motion and a Poisson random measure, with drifts that are functions of an auxiliary diffusion 'factor' process. The criterion, following earlier work by Bielecki, Pliska, Nagai and others, is risk-sensitive optimization (equivalent to maximizing the expected growth rate subject to a constraint on variance.) By using a change of measure technique introduced by Kuroda and Nagai...

The nonperturbative approach to soft high-energy hadron-hadron scattering, based on the analytic continuation of Euclidean Wilson-loop correlation functions, makes possible the investigation of the problem of the asymptotic energy dependence of hadron-hadron total cross sections by means of lattice calculations. In this contribution we compare the lattice numerical results to analytic results obtained with various nonperturbative techniques. We also discuss the possibility to obtain indications...

LHC provides a excellent laboratory to probe massive gravitons e?ects in scenarios with low scale gravity up to several Tev. Based on this fact, in the present work we are interested in analyzing the possible constraints on the free parameters of the gravity Lagrangian in 4 dimensions recently studied in the reference [1] taking only the torsion e?ects into account, in order to generate mass for the graviton. We shall consider a e?ective ?elds theory approach, in which the gravity is excited by...

This article is from Acta Crystallographica Section E: Structure Reports Online, volume 69.AbstractIn the molecule of the title compound, C7H9N3O3, the nitro and carbonyl groups are tilted with respect to the imidazole ring by 9.16?(6) and 65.47?(7)°, respectively. Neighbouring chains are linked via C?H?N and C?H?O hydrogen bonds forming two-dimensional slab-like networks lying parallel to (01-1).

Recent FERMI observations provide a lower limit of 10^{-15} G for the magnetic field strength in the intergalactic medium (IGM). This is consistent with theoretical expectations based on the Biermann battery effect, which predicts such IGM fields already at redshifts z~10. During gravitational collapse, such magnetic fields can be amplified by compression and by turbulence, giving rise to the small-scale dynamo. On scales below the Jeans length, the eddy turnover timescale is much shorter than...

In this paper we study the spin transport in frustrated antiferromagnetic FCC films by Monte Carlo simulation. In the case of Ising spin model, we show that the spin resistivity versus temperature exhibits a discontinuity at the phase transition temperature: an upward jump or a downward fall, depending on how many parallel and antiparallel localized spins interacting with a given itinerant spin. The surface effects as well as the difference of two degenerate states on the resistivity are...
