Nottingham Forest and 16 former players have started court proceedings against one of Belgium's largest football clubs, Anderlecht, over the 1984 UEFA Cup bribery scandal.

The former chairman of the Belgian club admitted earlier this year that the referee was paid the equivalent of ?27,000 as a "loan" ahead of the semi-final second leg, which the team won 3-0.

Forest, who had won the first leg 2-0, had a goal controversially disallowed.

The club has been trying for three months to reach a financial settlement with Anderlecht without success and have now served a writ.

Nottingham Forest - under the leadership of Brian Clough - was one of Britain's most successful teams in Europe in the late 1970s, winning the European Cup twice in succession.
