Fire leave 14 unprotected for this week's expansion draft

The Chicago Fire have left 14 players unprotected for this week’s Major League Soccer expansion draft but can’t lose any more than two as new teams in New York and Orlando, Fla. stock up for inaugural seasons in 2015.

Defenders Gonzalo Segares, Steven Kinney and Bakary Soumare are among veterans the Fire left unprotected plus younger players like midfielders Benji Joya and Grant Ward, forward Matt Fondy and defender Marco Franco. All had just completed their first MLS seasons.

Late season arrivals Sanna Nyassi and Florent Sinama-Pongolle are also vulnerable for the selection process which is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The Fire announced their protected list early Monday evening.

New York City FC and Orlando City SC will select 20 players from MLS’ other 18 teams in a 10-round draft. Each club is may protect 11 players and homegrown Fire players like midfielders Harry Shipp, Chris Ritter and Victor Pineda are also safe.

Players signed since the end of the MLS season are not eligible for the draft.
