Welcome to the new Television Centre

In December 2014, Stanhope and Mitsui Fudosan received a resolution to grant planning permission from the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham for revised plans for the redevelopment of the Television Centre. The revised plans for a mixed use development - including a new Soho House club, 950 homes, office accommodation, hotel and other leisure uses - were submitted in May 2014.

Other revisions agreed include the demolition of the existing Stage 4 and 5 office buildings and their replacement with a new office building with improved facades, designed by architects AHMM. This new building will incorporate the club, a roof terrace and swimming pool for Soho House. At ground level, there will be a mix of restaurants, shops and cafes. The Planning Committee also accepted a new detailed planning application for a revised design for the apartments and townhouses by architects dRMM, located on Plot E of the Television Centre Masterplan.

A change in use from residential to commercial has also been approved for a new office building fronting Hammersmith Park on the site of the old BBC restaurant block, with an overall increase in office space across the site. The planning committee previously approved Stanhope’s outline and detailed masterplan for the site in December 2013, with full planning permission granted in summer 2014.

The development will keep many of the original features of the much loved listed buildings, including the famous ‘doughnut’, atomic dot wall and Helios statue. The famous forecourt will be remodelled and enlivened by new shops, leisure and entertainment uses including a cinema, gym, restaurants and cafes, which will benefit the local community. The site will be opened up to the public for the first time with access through to Hammersmith Park and the surrounding area. Construction is due to start in April 2015.

BBC Worldwide will move into a new home at Television Centre early in the New Year and BBC Studios and Post Production will return to Television Centre in 2017 to operate refurbished studios 1-3. Following discussions with BBC, Stanhope took control of the Television Centre site six months early in October 2014. The early handover of the site from the BBC, originally planned to take place in April next year, enables Stanhope to start work immediately on soft stripping and other site remedial works.

This follows the appointment of Mace as Construction Manager for the project in September, and the appointment of demolition contractors Keltbray and McGee in October. The contractors have now started enabling works on site, while Lend Lease and BBC Worldwide are continuing to refurbish the former Stage 6 building.
