AIR DISPLAY AND WEAPONS
Lady luck brings us this rare visitor - A Srilankan Antonov An-12 (LZ-SFK). The aircraft was quick to leave. An-12s in IAF service were replaced by the Ilyushin Il-76 heavy transport.
Meaning 'The Rays of the Sun', the 'Suryakirans' are the IAF's formation aerobatic team. The team will be the first to receive the new HJT-36 Sitara IJT, even before the regular squadrons and establishments. The team has also performed over Srilankan skies.
Para jumpers from the IAF's 'Akash Ganga' sky diving team.
An interesting fusion. The Hunting BL-755 CBU is carried on the aft of the russian MBD-3 twin tandem pylon, while a BME-330C GP bomb occupies the fore position. The blue colored bomblets of the former are just visible below the pylon adapter. This setup has been taken from and is used for instructional purposes at the IAF's Instructor Training Academy at Tambaram, located just a few miles away from the city (and venue).
A Vympel R-60MK (AA-6 Aphid) WVRAAM. Note the umbilical used to feed liquid nitrogen to the seeker, a feature that is rarely visible on the type.?
The Vympel R-73E (AA-11 Archer) WVRAAM instructional setup.
Not totally unrelated, the Vympel R-27R1 and the obsolete Toropov R-3 (K-13) missiles are seen here on display at the IAF's Instructor's Training Academy at Tambaram, during the year 2002. The base operates HAL HJT-16s, HPT-32 trainers and HAL 748 transports.
