From the Publisher

Different versions of the jet have provided the backbone of the frontline strength of the Iranian air force since the 1970s, and whole generations of Iranian pilots and ground personnel have been trained to fly and maintain them. Indeed, the type bore the brunt of active combat operations during the long war with Iraq. Iranian F-4 Phantom IIs were also some of best equipped examples ever exported by the USA. Some Iranian Phantom II pilots gathered immense experience on the type, flying it in combat for more than ten years. This book removes the veil of secrecy surrounding Iranian Phantom II operations since the war with Iraq.

The Phantom in Iran-Iraq Conflict
Bishop and Cooper delivered an exhaustive insigth about Phantom in service in Iran. The begin of a quantiatively and qualitatively enormous build-up of the air force in the era of the Shah is described briefly, but most of the book is - conform its title ("...in Combat") devoted to the Iran-Iraq War. The authors detail many missions and problematic technical (spare problems) and political circumstances (many pilots were considered royalists by the Khomeini-government) under which they were undertaken. The narrative is obviously symathetic with Iran, but nowhere getting out of hand and turning into propaganda. Enthusiasts and model-makers are going to like many photos (two pages in colour, otherwise b&w;) and colour artworks. Most of the photographs are not of the best quality, but the reason for this are their age and circumstances under which they were made or purchased. An additional worth of this book is that it is one of only few available about the air warfare during Iran-Iraq conflict, other than the - much more expensive - general overview from these two authors.
