Swiss developer Oerlikon-Contraves's Skysheild 35 - 'Ahead' Air Defence System. The gas operated cannon has a 1000 rpm rate of fire and uses 228 rounds of Advanced Hit Efficiency and Destruction (AHEAD) ammunition. Each 35 mm 'Ahead' round carries a payload of 152 tungsten subprojectiles weighing 3.3 grams each. The system uses a gun computer to perform muzzle velocity measurement and programs the fuze of each round to activate and deploy a burst of subprojectiles at a certain distance in front of the intercepted target.
The result of an 'Ahead' round against a Hughes Falcon AAM, is seen above. Typically, a burst of twenty four 35 mm 'Ahead' rounds may be fired towards a single target. An X-band radar performs search and tracking for the Skysheild system.
